''Gadsby'' is a 1939 novel by Ernest Vincent Wright which does not include any words that contain the letter E, the most common letter in English. A work that deliberately avoids certain letters is known as a lipogram. The plot revolves around the dying fictional city of Branton Hills, which is revitalized as a result of the efforts of protagonist John Gadsby and a youth organizer. Though vanity published and little noticed in its time, the book has since become a favorite of fans of constrained writing and is a sought-after rarity among some book collectors. Later editions of the book have sometimes carried the alternative subtitle ''50,000 Word Novel Without the Letter "E"''. Despite Wright's claim, some editions of the book accidentally contain a handful of uses of the letter "e". The 1939 first edition, for example, contains "the" three times and "officers" once. Gadsby is a hamlet in central Alberta, Canada that is under the jurisdiction of the County of Stettler No. 6. It is located east of Red Deer on Highway 852 just north of Highway 12. Incorporated in 1909, it dissolved from village status in early 2020. History Gadsby was named for Toronto reporter Henry Franklin Gadsby, the namesake for a post office that was opened in 1909. It was incorporated as the Village of Gadsby on May 6, 1910. At a population of 40, Gadsby was Alberta's smallest village as of the 2016 census. It dissolved from village status to become a hamlet under the jurisdiction of the County of Stettler No. 6 on February 1, 2020. W Gadsby & Son Ltd is an English manufacturer and importer of wicker baskets and gift packaging. The company was established in 1864. It is based in Bridgwater, Somerset. History The company was founded by William Gadsby in Stratford, London, in the year 1864. The business sold wicker items from a shop in Gurney Road. During World War II the original shop was bombed, and the company chose to relocate to the Somerset Levels. This location was chosen due to the prevalence of willow growth in the area, a low lying wetland region. During World War II the company was employed by the Ministry of Defence to produce airborne panniers, large wicker baskets that were filled with supplies and munitions and dropped to troops by plane. The company opened a new store in Somerset, near the village of Burrowbridge at the side of the A361 road.
