Gabas (river)
The Gabas is a left tributary of the Adour, in the Landes, in the Southwest of France. It is long. Name The name ''Gabas'' is derived from the French ''gave'' ( Gascon: 'gabe'), which in the Pyrenees generically describes a small or large watercourse. The river was known as the ''fluvius gavasensis'' in 982.cartulary of Saint-Sever. A tributary of the Léez is named the ''Gabassot'', a hypocoristic of ''Gabas''. Geography The Gabas rises in the plateau of Ger in the north of Lourdes, as the union of the ''Gabastou'' and the ''Honrède''. It flows north-west like the neighboring rivers: the Luy, the Uzan and the Ousse. The Gabas crosses the Tursan, in the Landes. It flows into the Adour in Toulouzette, downstream from Saint-Sever. A dam of was built in its upper course to regulate the lowest water level. Ousse (river)
The Ousse, is a right tributary of the Gave de Pau, in Béarn (Pyrénées-Atlantiques), in the southwest of France. It flows into the Gave at the foot of the Pau Castle. It is long. Name The name ''Ousse'' is a common river name, probably derived from a former '' Ourse'', that applies to many other rivers, as a tributary of the Gers. The river left its name to the riverside commune Ousse. Geography The Ousse rises in Bartrès, a few kilometres north of Lourdes, at an elevation of above sea level. It drains an old dry valley left by the Gave de Pau after the final installation of the moraine of Lourdes, during the Riss glaciation. During the previous Mindel glaciation, the Gave flowed through Pont-Long, an older dry valley on the north of the Ousse. Saint-Sever (, Gascon ''Sent Sever'' ) is a commune in the Landes department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine in southwestern France. History and geography Saint-Sever stands on an eminence. It is south of Mont-de-Marsan, on the left bank of the Adour in the Chalosse area. Neighboring communes: Benquet, Bas-Mauco, Audignon, Cauna, Aurice, Montaut, Banos, Coudures, Eyres-Moncube, Montsoué, Montgaillard. The town's abbey was founded by Guillaume Sanche lord of Gascony in the late 10th century. According to the monastic chronicles, this was as the result of a vow he made after the battle of Taller, in Gascony, in which he defeated the Vikings (982). In 1060, after a fire, the abbey was reconstructed on the model of Cluny under the direction of the abbot Gregori de Montaner.
