GSHHG
GSHHG (Global Self-consistent, Hierarchical, High-resolution Geography Database; formerly ''Global Self-consistent, Hierarchical, High-resolution Shoreline Database'' (''GSHHS'')) is a high-resolution shoreline data set amalgamated from two data bases (the CIA world database WDBII, and the World Vector Shoreline database) in the public domain. The data have undergone extensive processing and are free of internal inconsistencies such as erratic points and crossing segments. The shorelines are constructed entirely from hierarchically arranged closed polygons. The four-level hierarchy is as follows: seashore, lakes, islands within lakes, ponds within islands within lakes. The data can be used to simplify data searches and data selections, or to study the statistical characteristics of shorelines and land-masses. Erratic Point
Erratic Point is a small, moss-covered point at the head of South West Bay, northeast of Cape Gazert, on the west side of Heard Island in the southern Indian Ocean. The First German Antarctica Expedition in 1902 charted a cape in this vicinity, from the summit of Mount Drygalski, and applied the name "Kap Lerche." In November 1929 the British Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition under Douglas Mawson charted a small point in this position and applied the name "Erratic Point" because of the large number of massive Glacial erratic, erratic boulders encountered there. The Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition was unable to find any significant feature in this immediate area during their 1948 survey of the island, hence the name Erratic Point was retained by them for this small point. Paul Wessel (geophysicist)
Paul Wessel (born 9 April 1904 in Plauen; d. 20 January 1967 in Berlin) was a member of the small secretariat of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany, the communist party of the former German Democratic Republic. Life Wessel graduated from a vocational school training as a metal worker. In 1918 he joined the Socialist Workers' Youth and was a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany from 1921 to 1932 and a correspondent for the SPD parliamentary faction of Saxony from 1926 to 1927. From 1929 to 1932 he was a worker and foreman at Chemische Werke Wolfen, then foreman of an artificial silk plant in Athens, and during the years 1939 to 1945 he was a foreman in the Agfa film factory in Wolfen. A map is a symbolic depiction emphasizing relationships between elements of some space, such as objects, regions, or themes.
