GQ (band)
GQ was an American group, formed in The Bronx, New York, primarily noted for its success in funk, R&B, soul music and disco. The core membership of the group commenced playing professionally, under different group names, as of 1968. History GQ was first formed in 1968 as a quartet called Sabu & the Survivors, with "Sabu" being a moniker of member Keith Crier. The group then evolved in the 1970s as The Rhythm Makers, playing primarily funk music and were Five Percenters. The Rhythm Makers were composed of Emanuel Rahiem LeBlanc (lead vocals and rhythm guitar), Keith "Sabu" Crier (bass and vocals), Herb Lane (keyboards and vocals) and Kenny Banks (drums and vocals). The group released one album, ''Soul on Your Side'' in 1976 on the De-Lite Records subsidiary Vigor Records, from which the group had one major international dancefloor hit, "Zone". The ''Billboard'' Hot 100 is the music industry standard record chart in the United States for songs, published weekly by '' Billboard'' magazine. Chart rankings are based on sales (physical and digital), radio play, and online streaming in the United States. The weekly tracking period for sales was initially Monday to Sunday when Nielsen started tracking sales in 1991, but was changed to Friday to Thursday in July 2015. This tracking period also applies to compiling online streaming data. Radio airplay, which, unlike sales figures and streaming, is readily available on a real-time basis, is also tracked on a Friday to Thursday cycle effective with the chart dated July 17, 2021 (previously Monday to Sunday and before July 2015, Wednesday to Tuesday). ''Two'' is the second album by American soul/disco group GQ, released in 1980 on the Arista label. It peaked at #9 on the R&B chart and #46 on the pop listing. Unlike its predecessor ''Disco Nights'', no single from this album crossed over to the ''Billboard'' Hot 100, but " Sitting in the Park" and "Standing Ovation" reached #9 and #12 respectively on the R&B chart. The former was, like " I Do Love You" from ''Disco Nights'', a cover of a 1965 Billy Stewart recording. Disco Nights
''Disco Nights'' is the debut album by American soul/disco group GQ, released in 1979 on the Arista label. The lead single " Disco Nights (Rock Freak)" was a major crossover hit, topping the R&B chart and peaking at #12 on the pop chart. The follow-up, a cover of Billy Stewart's 1965 classic " I Do Love You", also made the R&B top 5 and the pop top 20. On the back of its hit singles, the album became a big seller. It reached #2 R&B and #13 pop and was certified Platinum (one million copies shipped) by the RIAA. This album should not be confused with a later GQ compilation of the same name, and with a similar cover image. It catalogs more than three million album entries and 30 million tracks, as well as information on musicians and bands. The chart debuted as Hot R&B LPs in the issue dated January 30, 1965 in an effort by the magazine to further expand into the field of rhythm and blues music. It then went through several name changes, being known as Soul LPs in the 1970s and Top Black Albums in the 1980s, before returning to the R&B identification in 1990 and affixing a hip hop designation in 1999 to reflect the latter's growing sales and relationship to R&B during the decade. Capitol Records, LLC (known legally as Capitol Records, Inc. until 2007) is an American record label distributed by Universal Music Group through its Capitol Music Group imprint. It was founded as the first West Coast-based record label of note in the United States in 1942 by Johnny Mercer, Buddy DeSylva, and Glenn E. Wallichs. New Jack Swing
New jack swing, new jack, or swingbeat is a fusion genre of the rhythms and production techniques of hip hop and dance-pop, and the urban contemporary sound of R&B. Spearheaded by producers Teddy Riley and Bernard Belle, new jack swing was most popular from the late-1980s to early-1990s. Its influence, along with hip hop, seeped into pop culture. Merriam-Webster's online dictionary defines new jack swing as "pop music usually performed by black musicians that combines elements of jazz, funk, rap, and rhythm and blues." New jack swing took up the trend of using sampled beats and tunes, and created beats using electronic drum machines such as the then-new SP-1200 sampler and the Roland TR-808 to lay an "insistent beat under light melody lines and clearly enunciated vocals." The Roland TR-808 was sampled to create distinctive, syncopated, swung rhythms, with its snare sound being especially prominent. The Halos
The Halos were an American doo wop group from The Bronx. The group formed with members Al Cleveland, J.R. Bailey, Harold Johnson, and Arthur Crier (bass). Phil Johnson replaced J.R. Bailey shortly after the recording of "Nag". (Bailey later joined The Cadillacs.) The group got its start as session musicians, backing up vocalists recorded by producer Morty Craft. Their first single, "L-O-V-E" b/w "Heartbreaking World", was released in 1961 under the name The Craftys. It peaked at No. 4 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles. Their second release, now under the name The Halos, "Nag" b/w "Copy Cat", became a hit, reaching No. 25 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100. Face To Face (GQ Album)
''Face to Face'' is the third and final album by American soul/disco group GQ, released in 1981 on the Arista label. It peaked at #18 on the R&B chart and #140 on the pop listing. Two singles, "Shake" and "Sad Girl", were released; the latter became the group's third to chart on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100, peaking at #93. Known as a four-piece band in their heyday, by the release of this album, GQ had been reduced to a trio, with the departure of drummer Paul Service. Service was not officially replaced on this release, and thus, only the remaining three members are featured on the cover. The drum work on the album was performed by session drummers Howard King and Chris Parker. ''Jet'' is an American weekly digital magazine focusing on news, culture, and entertainment related to the African-American community. Founded in November 1951 by John H. Johnson of the Johnson Publishing Company in Chicago, Illinois, the magazine was billed as "The Weekly Negro News Magazine". ''Jet'' chronicled the civil rights movement from its earliest years, including the murder of Emmett Till, the Montgomery bus boycott, and the activities of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. ''Jet'' was printed from November 1, 1951, in digest-sized format in all or mostly black-and-white until its December 27, 1999, issue.
