Gambo, Central African Republic
Gambo is a town located in the Central African Republic prefecture of Mbomou. The town is named after Gambo, a Nzakara chief who ruled the area in the years before 1931. History On 18 March 2013 Gambo was captured by Séléka rebels. In April 2015 Gambo was reported to be under control of Union for Peace in the Central African Republic. In November 2016 Gambo was reportedly under control of Anti-balaka. On 3 August 2017 heavy clashes erupted between Anti-balaka The Anti-balaka is an alliance of militia groups based in the Central African Republic in the early 21st century said to be composed primarily of Christians. However, some church leaders have contested the claimed exclusively Christian character ... and UPC in the city resulting in 30 civilians and six volunteers from Red Cross killed and 150 houses being burnt. On 30 July 2018 Anti-balaka attacked UN convoy in Gambo injuring two Egyptian peacekeepers. On 6 May 2021 the town was recaptured by government forces.

Gambo is a town and designated place in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It is in the northeastern portion of the island of Newfoundland on Freshwater Bay. It is in Division No. 7. It is the closest town to Mint Brook - the birthplace of Joey Smallwood, former Premier of Newfoundland and last father of confederation. It is located from Gander International Airport and from St. John's. History The name Gambo first appeared in the census of 1857. The name Gambo was said by M.F. Howley, to be a corruption of a Spanish or Portuguese name that meant "bay of does". The first steam driven saw mill in Newfoundland was established here. The first way office was established in 1882 under Waymaster Simeon Osmond. In 1964 the three separate communities of Dark Cove, Middle Brook, and Gambo were incorporated as one town known as Dark Cove-Middle Brook-Gambo. USS West Gambo (ID-3220)
USS ''West Gambo'' (ID-3220) was a steel-hulled, single-screw cargo ship that served in the United States Navy from 1918 to 1919. She later saw commercial service as SS ''West Gambo'' and SS ''Empire Hartebeeste'', and under the latter name was sunk during World War II. Construction acquisition, and commissioning SS ''West Gambo'' was built under a United States Shipping Board contract in 1918 Seattle, Washington, by the Skinner and Eddy Corporation. She was launched on 4 July 1918 and acquired by the U.S. Navy on 20 July 1918 for World War I service, assigned the naval registry Identification Number (Id. No.) 3220, and commissioned the same day as USS ''West Gambo''. United States Navy service Assigned to the Naval Overseas Transportation Service, ''West Gambo'' departed Seattle on 30 July 1918 bound for Port Costa, California, where she loaded a full cargo of flour consigned to the American Red Cross.
