GPA Footballer Of The Year
The GPA Footballer of the Year was awarded annually by the Gaelic Players Association, as part of the Opel Gaelic Players awards scheme, established in 2006. History The title was first awarded in 2001, at the foundation of the association, and was first sponsored in 2005, also by Opel. The award honoured the achievements of a Gaelic footballer of outstanding excellence for each season. At the end of the Football Championship the association members voted on for the award recipient. As the award was voted on by the players it was often viewed as one of the greatest individual honours. Unlike other GAA awards the GPA Footballer of the Year was presented with a prize which has the monetary value of a new car. Gaelic Players Association
The Gaelic Players Association ( ga, Cumann na n-Imreoirí Gaelacha), or GPA, is the officially recognised player representative body for inter county Gaelic footballers and Hurling, hurlers in Ireland. The GPA's aim is to promote and protect all aspects of player welfare and to provide an independent voice for players. The GPA was formed in 1999 when former IMG employee Donal O'Neill and a number of high-profile inter-county players, including Tyrone's Fergal Logan and Peter Canavan, Derry's Fergal McCusker and Dublin's Dessie Farrell were instrumental in the birth of the organisation. The association was launched in Belfast. Farrell became the first chairman in 2000 and was subsequently appointed as full-time chief executive of the GPA in 2003. Kieran Donaghy
Kieran Donaghy (born 1 March 1983) is an Irish Gaelic footballer and basketball player. He plays for Tralee club Austin Stacks and, formerly, at senior level for the Kerry county team. Donaghy won four All-Ireland Senior Football Championship medals, eight Munster Championships and three National League titles with Kerry, and is the recipient of three All Stars Awards. He announced his retirement from inter-county football on 11 September 2018. Donaghy is also a long-time basketball player, currently playing for Tralee Warriors in the Irish Super League. Inter-county 2005 Donaghy's emergence in 2006 was regarded as a "rags to riches story". The Galway County Boards of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) ( ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Coiste Chontae na Gaillimhe) or Galway GAA are one of the 32 county boards in Ireland; they are responsible for Gaelic games in County Galway, and for the Galway county teams. Pádraic Joyce (born 1 April 1977) is a Gaelic football manager and former player who played as a forward. He has been manager of the senior Galway county team since 2019. Joyce won the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship twice with Galway as a player and received three All Star Awards. Steven McDonnell (Gaelic Footballer)
Steven McDonnell (born 13 July 1979) is an Irish former Gaelic footballer who played in the full-forward line for his home club Killeavy St Moninna's and at senior level for the Armagh county team. McDonnell is his county's top scorer in National Football League history, finishing his career with 33–282 (381) in that competition. Mattie Forde
Mattie Forde is an Irish Gaelic footballer from Ballyfad, County Wexford, Ireland. He formerly played at senior level for the Wexford county team and received an All Star in 2004. He plays his club football for Kilanerin–Ballyfad, and also plays hurling for the club. Forde established himself as one of the top forwards in the game, regularly racking up high scores. Stephen O'Neill (born 19 November 1980) is an Irish former Gaelic footballer from Strabane, Northern Ireland, who played at senior level for the Tyrone county team. He won three All-Ireland Senior Football Championship medals, two All-Ireland Under 21 Football Championship, Under 21 medals, and a All-Ireland Minor Football Championship, Minor medal.
