Gymnastics At The 1964 Summer Olympics – Women's Uneven Bars
The women's uneven bars was a gymnastics event contested as part of the Gymnastics at the 1964 Summer Olympics programme at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. Results Preliminary Each gymnast competed in both compulsory and optional exercises. The score for each was determined by a panel of five judges, with the top and bottom scores being dropped before the remaining three were averaged (and truncated to three decimal places). The two average scores were then summed. This score was also used in calculating both Gymnastics at the 1964 Summer Olympics - Women's individual all-around, individual all-around and Gymnastics at the 1964 Summer Olympics - Women's team competition, team scores. The top 6 advanced to the final for the apparatus, keeping half of their preliminary score to be added to their final score. Polina Astakhova
Polina Ghrighorievna Astakhova (Полина Григорьевна Астахова, 30 October 1936 – 5 August 2005) was a Soviet and Ukrainian artistic gymnast. She won ten medals at the 1956, 1960 and 1964 Summer Olympics. Biography Astakhova became interested in artistic gymnastics at age 13, after she had watched the gymnastics championships in Donetsk, where their family moved a short time before. She trained in the local gymnastics sports club Shakhtyor under Vladimir Alieksandrovitch Smirnov. Astakhova earned a nickname ''The Russian Birch'' in Western countries for her exceptional grace, and at the 1960 Olympics she was even called ''Madonna'' by the Italian journalists. Between 1956 and 1966 Astakhova was on top of many international and national competitions especially on the uneven bars apparatus event. She was a member of the USSR team between 1955 and 1968. Kiyoko Ono
was a Japanese politician and gymnast. She competed at the 1960 and 1964 Olympics and won a team bronze medal in 1964. Political career Ono won the election in 1986 and was one of the members in the House of Councillors for 1986 to 2007. While Ono occupied the seat she once served as a Minister of State (a chairman of National Safety Commission). Ono was affiliated with the openly revisionist organization Nippon Kaigi. Personal life and death Ono's father died when she was three months old. In 1958, she graduated from the Tokyo University of Education and married Takashi Ono, a fellow Olympic gymnast. They have two sons and three daughters; the first two children were born between 1961 and 1963 while both parents were actively competing. Linda Metheny
Linda Joan Metheny-Mulvihill (born August 12, 1947) is a retired American artistic gymnast. She won seven gold, three silver and one bronze medal at the Pan American Games in 1967 and 1971, and served as the flag bearer for the American team in 1971. She competed at the 1964, 1968 and 1972 Olympics with the best individual result of fourth place on the balance beam in 1968, becoming the first American gymnast to qualify to an Olympic event final. Domestically she won at least 18 individual national titles. In 1985 she was inducted into the U.S. Gymnastic Hall of Fame. Metheny started competing in 1962, and between 1964 and 1973 was a member of the national team. After the 1964 Olympics she enrolled at the University of Illinois as their only female gymnast. Keiko Tanaka-Ikeda (田中-池田 敬子, born Keiko Tanaka on November 11, 1933) is the first Japanese female gymnast to win a world title, which she accomplished on the balance beam in 1954 (by becoming first Asian female gymnast who win a world gold medal). For 63 years, she remained the only Japanese female gymnast who won a world gold medal - until Mai Murakami won the floor exercise at the 2017 World Championships. Tanaka-Ikeda won seven more medals at the world championships in 1958–1966. Ute Starke
Ute Starke (born 14 January 1939) is a German former gymnast. She competed at the 1960, 1964 and 1968 Summer Olympics in all artistic gymnastics events and finished in sixth, fourth and third place with the German and later East German teams. Individually her best achievement was sixth place on the vault in 1964. She won a gold and a silver medal in this event at the European championships of 1961 and 1965. She was elected 1961 East German Sportswoman of the Year after winning the European Championship on the vault. She was one of the first gymnasts from the former GDR who reached world class status. Between 1961 and 1965 Starke won seven East German individual titles. She is now considered responsible for the rise of world class women's gymnastics in East Germany, and later became a longtime gymnast coach at her home club SC Leipzig.
