Gyalecta Kibiensis
''Gyalecta kibiensis'' is a species of saxicolous (rock-dwelling), crustose lichen in the family Gyalectaceae. Found in Japan, it was formally described as a new species in 2005 by Hiroshi Harada and Isao Yoshimura. The type specimen was collected from limestone in Iwatutsudani (Takahashi, Okayama). The thallus of the lichen is smooth and has a light greyish-green colour. Crustose lichens are lichens that form a crust which strongly adheres to the substrate (soil, rock, tree bark, etc.), making separation from the substrate impossible without destruction. The basic structure of crustose lichens consists of a cortex layer, an algal layer, and a medulla. The upper cortex layer is differentiated and is usually pigmented. The algal layer lies beneath the cortex. The medulla fastens the lichen to the substrate and is made up of fungal hyphae. ''Gyalectales'' is an order of lichen-forming fungi in the class Lecanoromycetes. It contains 5 families, 15 genera and about 550 species. Taxonomy The Gyalectales were introduced in a 1974 publication by Aino Henssen and Martin Jahns, but not formally published until 1986 by David Hawksworth and Ove Eriksson.
