The Guild of Freemen of the City of London is an association of those who hold the Freedom of the City of London. Freedom Of The City Of London
The Freedom of the City of London started around 1237 as the status of a 'free man' or 'citizen', protected by the charter of the City of London and not under the jurisdiction of a feudal lord. In the Middle Ages, this developed into a freedom or right to trade, becoming closely linked to the medieval guilds, the livery companies. In 1835 eligibility for the freedom of the City was extended to anyone who lived in, worked in or had a strong connection to the City. The freedom that citizens enjoy has long associations with privileges in the governance of the City. Whilst no longer carrying many substantive rights and largely existing as a tradition, the freedom is a pre-requisite for standing for election to the Common Council and Court of Aldermen of the City of London. Sir Frank Samuel Alexander, 1st Baronet (17 June 1881 – 18 July 1959) was a British shipowner and shipbroker. He was Lord Mayor of London from 1944 to 1945. Poppy, Lady Cooksey OBE DL, previously Janet Wardell-Yerburgh, née Janet Clouston Bewley Cathie (born 15 February 1940) is a British fencer whose later career was in picture restoration. She married firstly the Olympic oarsman Hugh Wardell-Yerburgh and secondly the business man Sir David Cooksey. In 1998 she was appointed as a Deputy Lieutenant of Hampshire. Sir Gavyn Farr Arthur KStJ (13 September 1951 – 16 May 2016) was a British judge and prominent figure in the City of London who served as the 675th Lord Mayor from 2002 to 2003. Early life The only surviving son of Major Leonard Arthur, JP, by his wife Raina ''née'' Farr, he was educated at Harrow School before going up to Christ Church, Oxford. His father was in remainder to the baronetcy of his great-great-grandfather, Lt-Gen. Sir George Arthur, and from 2010 until his death Sir Gavyn was heir presumptive to the Arthur family title. Sir Clive Haydn Martin, (born 20 March 1935) is a British businessman who was Lord Mayor of London from 1999 to 2000. Martin was born in London to Thomas Stanley and Dorothy Gladys Martin. Sir Alexander Colin Cole FRHSC (Hon) (16 May 1922 – 18 February 2001) was a long serving officer of arms at the College of Arms in London. Sir Peter Drury Haggerston Gadsden FREng (28 June 1929 – 4 December 2006) was a Canadian born British chartered engineer and globe-trotting trader. He was the 652nd Lord Mayor of London in 1979 and 1980. Sir John Anthony Grant (29 May 1925 – 9 October 2016) was a British Conservative politician who served as a Member of Parliament (MP) from 1964 until his retirement in 1997.
