Grønningen (street)
Grønningen is a Danish artists cooperative whose members arrange exhibitions and similar events. Founded in 1915, it is one of the oldest and most important groupings of its kind in Denmark and currently has 54 members. It is named after the street Grønningen in Copenhagen where the first art exhibition was held. Initially, it brought together artists interested in radical and experimental art who had been members of Den Frie Udstilling ("The Free Exhibition"). Most prominent in the early years were artists such as Harald Giersing, Sigurd Swane, Olaf Rude, William Scharff, Fritz Syberg and Johannes Larsen. They were soon joined by Vilhelm Lundstrøm, Svend Johansen, Axel Salto, Jens Søndergaard, Niels Lergaard, Erik Hoppe, Christine Swane, Astrid Noack and Gottfred Eickhoff. Kristiansand
Kristiansand is a seaside resort city and municipality in Agder county, Norway. The city is the fifth-largest and the municipality the sixth-largest in Norway, with a population of around 112,000 as of January 2020, following the incorporation of the municipalities of Søgne and Songdalen into the greater Kristiansand municipality. Christine Swane
Christine Swane née Christine Larsen (29 May 1876 in Kerteminde – 16 August 1960 in Farum) was a Denmark, Danish painter who first associated with the Funen Painters before developing her own increasingly Cubism, Cubist style. Biography Christine Swane was the sister of Johannes Larsen, one of the key members of the Funen Painters (''Fynboerne''), with whom she associated while young. She adopted their Naturalistic approach and strong use of colour as evidenced by her early flower paintings. After studying at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Danish Academy (1898–1901) under Viggo Johansen, she was instructed by Jens Ferdinand Willumsen, Fritz Syberg and Harald Giersing. Around 1910, she met Karl Isakson and Sigurd Swane who introduced her to contemporary French art. Her marriage with Swane ended in 1920 when they were divorced. De Tretten
De Tretten (The Group of Thirteen), also De Tretten Kunstnere (The Thirteen Artists), was a grouping of young Danish artists who arranged their own exhibitions in Copenhagen from 1909 to 1912 in order to display works which would not have been accepted for exhibition by the then rather traditional Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Background Based on the French model of the Salon des Refusés, De Tretten was founded on the initiative of Olaf Rude (who exhibited there in 1909 and 1910) and the critic Jens Pedersen. Rude had managed to obtain financial guarantees for the enterprise from those who had recently established themselves in the seaside resort of Marielyst on Falster which had been promoted as an artists colony along the lines of Skagen. Kunsthal Charlottenborg
Kunsthal Charlottenborg is an exhibition building in Copenhagen, Denmark. It is the official exhibition gallery of the Royal Danish Academy of Art. History Charlottenborg Palace was constructed in 1672–83 as a residence for Ulrik Frederik Gyldenløve (1638–1704). It was constructed in the Baroque architectural idiom shared by Holland, England and Denmark. . Dowager queen Charlotte Amalie (1650–1714) bought the palace in 1700, and her name has remained with it ever since. In 1787, the ownership of the Palace was transferred to the Royal Danish Academy of Art. Egill Jacobsen
Egill Jacobsen (16 December 1910 – 21 April 1998) was a Danish painter who became a professor at the Royal Danish Academy. Biography Born in Copenhagen, Jacobsen studied painting at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts under Kræsten Iversen and Peder Hald (1932-33). His earliest paintings were inspired by traditional Danish landscape painting under the influence of Albert Gottschalk but after visiting Paris in 1934 when he experienced the work of Matisse and Picasso, he began to create Abstract images of brightly coloured beak-shaped masked figures inspired by ethnographic art. He went on to paint a series of works devoid of any motifs in which colour was the only criterion for expression. From 1940, he produced more masked images with geometrical shapes depicting teeth, eggs and other such features in pure spectral colours. Richard Mortensen
Richard Mortensen (23 October 1910 – 6 January 1993) was a Danish painter. Biography Richard Strange Mortensen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. He studied between 1931 and 1932 at the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen. Influenced by the works of Wassily Kandinsky, he developed an abstract art style. In Copenhagen, Mortensen was joint founder of the "Linien" school of abstract painters. In 1937, he undertook a study trip to Paris, where he met pioneers of surrealism, such as Salvador Dalí, Roger Vitrac, Gala Éluard, Michel Leiris, Antonin Artaud, Raymond Queneau and André Masson. During the Second World War, Mortensen's works reflected the violence of Europe. After the death of his wife Sonja Hauberg, in 1947 moved to Paris remaining there until 1964. Abstract art uses visual language of shape, form, color and line to create a composition which may exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world. Western art had been, from the Renaissance up to the middle of the 19th century, underpinned by the logic of perspective and an attempt to reproduce an illusion of visible reality. By the end of the 19th century many artists felt a need to create a new kind of art which would encompass the fundamental changes taking place in technology, science and philosophy. Lars Bo
Lars Bo (29 May 1924 in Kolding – 21 October 1999 in Paris) was a Danish artist and writer. He is known for his graphic works with surrealistically inspired fantastic motifs. He was nicknamed "Wizard". Lars Bo worked with P. Rostrup Bøyesen at Statens Museum for Kunst in the period from 1939 to 1940, and he went to The Danish Design School from 1941 to 1943, after which he travelled in Europe. From 1947 until his death in 1999 he lived in Paris. From 1948 to 1950 Lars Bo worked in Johnny Friedläender and Albert Flocons graphic studio in Paris. Lars Bo wrote the novel ''Det vidunderlige hus i Paris'' (The Wonderful House in Paris). Ib Spang Olsen
Ib Spang Olsen (11 June 1921 – 15 January 2012) was a Danish writer and illustrator best known to generations of Danes for cartoons and illustrations, many of which appeared in children's publications. Those include a series of nursery rhyme books written by Halfdan Rasmussen, including "Halfdans ABC". He also wrote his own children's books, such as the whimsical tale of the seasons, The Marsh Crone's Brew'. Olsen drew for newspapers, magazines, books, posters, television, and comics. For his lasting contribution as a children's illustrator Olsen received the international Hans Christian Andersen Medal in 1972. Life Olsen was born in Østerbro, Copenhagen. He had a modest upbringing but his memories of his childhood remained and became inspirations for his humorous and grotesque pencil drawings of everyday life.
