Grunwald Poznań (field Hockey)
WKS Grunwald Poznań is a Polish field hockey club, a section of the wider multi-sports club, from Poznań. It is historically one of the most successful clubs in the country and regularly competes in European competitions. History The section traces its roots to inter-war military club WKS Poznań, champions of Poland in 1935, 1936 and 1938. However the courts have decided that these titles are not formally recognised as belonging to WKS Grunwald. The section was created in January 1952. At the turn of 1951/1952, the Board of the Union Sports Club Włókniarz Poznań (third place in the Polish Championships in 1950) made a proposal to the Board of the Garrison Military Sports Club (GWKS) Poznań to take over the field and ice hockey sections, which it itself was unable to maintain. Field Hockey
Field hockey is a team sport structured in standard hockey format, in which each team plays with ten outfield players and a goalkeeper. Teams must drive a round hockey ball by hitting it with a hockey stick towards the rival team's shooting circle and then into the goal. The match is won by the team that scores the most goals. Matches are played on grass, watered turf, artificial turf, synthetic field, or indoor boarded surface. The stick is made of wood, carbon fibre, fibreglass, or a combination of carbon fibre and fibreglass in different quantities. The stick has two sides; one rounded and one flat; only the flat face of the stick is allowed to progress the ball. During play, goalkeepers are the only players allowed to touch the ball with any part of their body. A player's hand is considered part of the stick if holding the stick. WKS Grunwald Poznań is a multi-sports club based in Poznań, Poland. The handball section had been champions several times whereas the field hockey section is one of the top teams not only in the country but in Europe. Grunwald, Poznań
Grunwald is a part of the city of Poznań in western Poland. It was one of the five governmental districts ''(dzielnica)'' into which the city was divided prior to 1990, and which are retained for certain administrative purposes (see Administrative division of Poznań). The name "Grunwald" comes from the name of the street ''ulica Grunwaldzka'', which had been so named in 1919 in commemoration of the Battle of Grunwald. A neighbourhood located in the vicinity of that street came to be known as Grunwald, and that name was transferred to the entire ''dzielnica'', covering the south-western parts of the city, on its creation in 1954.
