Gros Fronton
The Gros fronton was a short fronton constructed in 1938 by the San Sebastián Municipality on the Gran Avenida street. The modalities played in the fronton were hand-pelota, paleta and short Xístera. The fronton was demolished in 1961. Fronton (court)
A fronton ( es, frontón; eu, frontoi or ; french: fronton) is a two-walled or single-walled court used as a playing area for Basque pelota. History The front wall of the first frontons in villages was usually the wall of a church. Because the games being played close by, several priests would play pelota along with the villagers and got to be well-known players and often served as referees in provincial or town competitions but were out of the picture when it turned into a commercialized sport. Because of the increasing popularity of the game, many churches put up signs forbidding pelota games on their porches. The games were also played in town halls, but when the game turned into a highly popular entertainment in the region, towns started to build special frontons in open-air or closed courts. Basque pelota (Basque: '' pilota'', Spanish: '' pelota vasca'', French: '' pelote basque'') is the name for a variety of court sports played with a ball using one's hand, a racket, a wooden bat or a basket, against a wall (''frontis or fronton'') or, more traditionally, with two teams face to face separated by a line on the ground or a net. Atano III
Mariano Juaristi Mendizábal (February 21, 1904 – January 12, 2001) was an Azkoitian Basque pelota player known as Atano III. He is often considered one of the best ''pelotaris'' of all time, dominating the 1st hand-pelota category from 1926 to 1948 and winner of 4 championships (1940, 1942, 1944 and 1946). Early life Mariano Mendizábal was born on 1904 in Azkoitia, Guipúzcoa in the Caserío ''Atano'' from which his family pseudonym comes. The Juaristi (or ''Atano'') family formed a ''pelotari dynasty'', six of them were ''pelotaris'' and one of them manufactured balls. Mariano, Atano III, was the most well-known of them. Atano VII, his younger brother, also was a very important player, as was Atano X, son of Atano I. Professional career Mendizábal made his professional debut in 1920, on the Azkoitia fronton.
