Mikhail Leonidovich Gromov
Mikhael Leonidovich Gromov (also Mikhail Gromov, Michael Gromov or Misha Gromov; russian: link=no, Михаи́л Леони́дович Гро́мов; born 23 December 1943) is a Russian-French mathematician known for his work in geometry, analysis and group theory. He is a permanent member of IHÉS in France and a professor of mathematics at New York University. Gromov has won several prizes, including the Abel Prize in 2009 "for his revolutionary contributions to geometry". Biography Mikhail Gromov was born on 23 December 1943 in Boksitogorsk, Soviet Union. His Russian father Leonid Gromov and his Jewish mother Lea Rabinovitz were pathologists. Mikhail Mikhailovich Gromov (russian: link=no, Михаи́л Миха́йлович Гро́мов; – 22 January 1985) was a Russian and Soviet military aviator, test pilot, and Hero of the Soviet Union. Early life Gromov's father, Mikhail Konstantinovich Gromov, was of noble intelligentsia and served as military medic. His mother, Lyubov Ignatyevna Andreeva, was from peasant family and received training as an obstetrician. Gromov spent his childhood in Kaluga, Rzhev, Myza-Raevo (near Moscow). He graduated from Voskresensky Real School in Moscow, and went on to study at the IMTS from 1916 to 1917. Ulyana Matveyevna Gromova ( uk, Уляна Матвіївна Громова, translit=Uliana Matviyivna Hromova; russian: Ульяна Матвеевна Громова; 3 January 1924 – 16 January 1943) was a Soviet Ukrainian partisan who was a member of the Young Guard resistance movement in Krasnodon, in modern-day eastern Ukraine. She was executed by the Nazis in 1943, along with the rest of the Young Guard's leadership, and was posthumously declared a Hero of the Soviet Union. Boris Vsevolodovich Gromov (russian: Бори́с Все́володович Гро́мов; born 7 November 1943) is a prominent Russian military and political figure. From 2000 to 2012, he was the Governor of Moscow Oblast. Zhanna Fyodorovna Gromova (russian: Жанна Фёдоровна Громова; born 22 January 1949 in Vologda) is a Russian figure skating coach. Among her former and current students are Nikolai Morozov, Ilia Averbukh, Sergei Dobrin, Abzal Rakimgaliev and most notably Irina Slutskaya, who had worked with Gromova for her entire career.
