Grenada At The 2008 Summer Olympics
Grenada competed in the 2008 Summer Olympics, held in Beijing, People's Republic of China from 8 to 24 August 2008. Nine athletes represented the country, eight track and field athletes and one boxer. Of the eight track and field competitors, five were women, and three were men. Although none of the athletes would win a medal, runners Allison George and Neisha Bernard-Thomas progressed past the qualification rounds, and participated on behalf of Grenada in the quarterfinals of their events. Grenada's Beijing delegation was their biggest at nine athletes, and marked the seventh consecutive appearance of Grenada at the Olympics. Despite controversy surrounding Chinese activities in Tibet, Grenada continued to support the upholding of the Chinese Olympic Games. As thanks, the People's Republic of China constructed a new cricket stadium on the island, among other activities. Damola Osayomi
Oludamola Bolanle ("Damola") Osayomi (born 26 June 1986 in Ilesha, Osun State) is a Nigerian sprinter who specializes in the 100 metres and 200 metres. She is a four-time gold medallist at the African Championships in Athletics and won an Olympic silver medal with Nigeria in the 4×100 metres relay at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. She also won the 100 and 200 m sprints at the 2007 All-Africa Games. Her personal best for the 100 m is 10.99 seconds, set in São Paulo in 2011. Mandeep Kaur (athlete)
Mandeep Kaur (born 19 April 1988 in Jagadhri) is an Indian athlete who mainly competes in the 400 meters. She competed at the 2008 Olympic Games, but failed to pass the first round. Mandeep Kaur won gold medals in the women's events at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and the 2010 and 2014 Asian Games. On 29 June 2011, Reuters reported that she had tested positive for the anabolic steroids methandienone and stanozolol during off-season tests, following the same day announcement of the Athletics Federation of India. Novelene Williams
Novlene Hilaire Williams-Mills (''née'', Williams; born 26 April 1982), is a retired Jamaican track and field athlete. She won the bronze medal in the 400 metres at the 2007 World Championships. She is also a three-time Olympic silver medallist in the 4×400 metres relay. In 2015 she won relay gold alongside her Jamaican teammates. Early life Williams-Mills was born in Saint Ann, Jamaica. She is a graduate of Ferncourt High School, located in Claremont, St. Ann Parish, Jamaica. Kineke Alicia Alexander (born 21 February 1986 in Kingstown, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines) is a Vincentian sprinter who competed in the 400m event at the 2008 Summer Olympics and the 2012 Summer Olympics. She was the flag bearer for Saint Vincent and the Grenadines at the 2008 opening ceremony and the 2012 opening ceremony. Athletics At The 2008 Summer Olympics – Women's 400 Metres
The Women's 400 metres at the 2008 Summer Olympics took place on 16–19 August at the Beijing National Stadium. The qualifying standards were 51.55 s (A standard) and 52.35 s (B standard). Favourites for the event included Sanya Richards-Ross and the reigning world champion, Christine Ohuruogu. In the final, Richards-Ross made a rapid start and quickly took the lead, while Ohuruogu ran a more even-paced race, but was well down the field entering the final straight. However, in the last 100 metres Richard-Ross, clearly tired from her earlier effort, began to tie up badly, while Ohuruogu began to surge through the field. At the line, Great Britain's Christine Ohuruogu won in 49.62 seconds to add the Olympic title to her World title, just pipping Shericka Williams by 0.07 seconds to take gold. LaShawn Merritt (born June 27, 1986) is an American track and field athlete who competes in sprinting events, specializing in the 400 metres. Eleni Artymata ( el, Ελένη Αρτυματά, born 16 May 1986 in Paralimni) is a track and field sprint athlete, who competes internationally for Cyprus.
