Greenville, Orange County, New York
Greenville is a town in Orange County, New York, United States, located along the southern county and state line. The population was 4,689 at the 2020 census. Unique among Orange County towns, Greenville has neither cities nor villages, and most of the communities are small clusters of houses. (Residents of the town get their mail through the Port Jervis or Middletown post office.) Greenville is near Exit 2 off Interstate 84, which features the town's firehouse and a few other businesses. History The oldest settlement in Greenville is Smiths Corners, named after Elijah Smith and founded at the end of the Revolutionary War. Settlement first began in 1750. Construction began in 1754, then ceased when money from the Crown was revoked. Building did not resume until the late 1790s. The town of Greenville was separated from Minisink in 1853. Greenville, commonly known as Edgemont, is a census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Greenburgh in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 9,394 at the 2020 census. Most of its residents refer to the area as Edgemont, which is also the name of its school district. It is an ethnically diverse inner suburb of New York City, lying north of Columbus Circle. It is a partial bedroom community, with some of its residents working in Midtown Manhattan. Other workplaces of Greenville residents are in the offices and factories of White Plains, Yonkers, The Bronx, Rockland County, New York or Stamford, Connecticut, as well as many businesses and hospitals in southern Westchester County. The hamlet was originally ethnic Jewish and Italian, but is now ethnically diverse. Its main street is Central Park Avenue. Greenville is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Greenville, in Greene County, New York, United States. The population of the CDP was 688 at the 2010 census, out of a total 3,739 people in the town as a whole. Geography Greenville is located in northern Greene County at (42.4153596, -74.0220769), in the north-central part of the town of Greenville. Its elevation is above sea level. New York State Route 32 passes through the center of the hamlet, leading northeast to Albany and south to Cairo. New York State Route 81 leads west from Greenville to Cooksburg.
