Great Hong Kong Typhoon Of 1937
The 1937 Great Hong Kong Typhoon was an unnamed typhoon in Hong Kong on 2 September 1937. It was one of the deadliest typhoons in Hong Kong history killing 11,000 people. In Macau, 21 people died by this typhoon. History Victoria Harbour at the time was the seventh busiest in the world. It was always busy with sampans, junks, ferries, cargo ships, ocean liners, yachts and warships. The typhoon wind was so strong that observatory instruments capable of registering winds up to 125 mph broke down. Royal Observatory Hong Kong have since recorded the wind with a mean hourly wind average of 59 knots, 68 mph, 109 km/h, a 10-minute mean Wind of 74 knots, 85 mph, 137 km/h. Typhoon York (1999)
Severe Tropical Storm York (or Typhoon York), also known in the Philippines as Tropical Depression Neneng, was a tropical cyclone that formed in September 1999. It brought severe impacts to the Philippines and southeastern China, causing 35 deaths. York is considered the worst tropical cyclone to hit Hong Kong since 1983. York was first noted as a tropical disturbance over the Philippine Sea on September 9, 1999, and became a tropical depression three days later on September 12. Initially, the intensity of the system wasthat of a weak tropical depression, however it formed a new center while in the northern South China Sea west of Luzon the following day. Despite intensifying into a tropical storm the following day, York's track was erratic and remained stationary for a while, until it landfalled near Hong Kong as a minimal typhoon on September 16. 1908 Hong Kong Typhoon
The 1908 Hong Kong Typhoon which occurred on the night of 27 to 28 July 1908 caused substantial loss of life and property damage. The most notable occurrence of the event was the loss of the SS ''Ying King'' (英京號), a steamship, which sank while trying to seek shelter from the storm; 421 people onboard died when the ship sank as well as the tremendous property damages and drowning cases on land flooding. In the initial reports, about one thousand people were estimated to have drowned, more than 20 houses collapsed, and most of the Hong Kong wharf facilities were damaged. As a result of this catastrophe, additional safety and shelter measures were undertaken, which includes the construction of a second typhoon shelter in Hong Kong harbour.
