Great Britain Men's National Artistic Gymnastics Team
The Great Britain men's national artistic gymnastics team represents Great Britain in FIG international competitions. History British gymnasts first competed at the Olympic Games in 1908. They won their first Olympic team medal, a bronze, at the 1912 Olympic Games. They would win their second team medal, another bronze, 100 years later at the 2012 Olympic Games. European Gymnastics is one of five continental unions that represents the interests of Europe in the International Gymnastics Federation (french: Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique or ''FIG''). William Cowhig (5 April 1887 – 16 August 1964) was a British gymnast who competed at the 1908 Summer Olympics, the 1912 Summer Olympics and the 1920 Summer Olympics. Three gymnastics disciplines were contested at the 2012 Olympic Games in London: artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics and trampolining. The trampoline events were held at the North Greenwich Arena (normally called The O2 Arena) from 3 to 4 August; the artistic events were also held at the North Greenwich Arena, from 28 July to 7 August. British Gymnastics, also known as the British Amateur Gymnastics Association (BAGA), is the sports governing body for gymnastics and Trampolining in the UK. History It was founded in 1888 as the Amateur Gymnastics and Fencing Association. Gymnastics had been adopted in this country, having been invented in Germany by Friedrich Ludwig Jahn, to improve the health and fitness of its soldiers. The rings, pommel horse, parallel bars, and horizontal bar were developed by Jahn. In the late 1800s gymnastics became popular for men thanks to the Army Physical Training Corps which was formed in 1860. Walter Tysall won the men's silver medal in the 1908 Olympics. The 10th European Men's and Women's Artistic Gymnastics Championships was held from 11 to 16 April 2023 in Antalya, Turkey. This was the 45th European championships in total for men, and 35th in total for women (including the separate men's and women's championships held in even numbered years).
