Grand Turk (Colorado)
Grand Turk is a mountain summit in San Juan County, Colorado, San Juan County, Colorado, United States. It is located southwest of the community of Silverton, Colorado, Silverton, on land managed by San Juan National Forest. Grand Turk is west of the Continental Divide of the Americas, Continental Divide in the San Juan Mountains which are a subrange of the Rocky Mountains. Grand Turk is visible from viewpoints along U.S. Route 550, Highway 550. Precipitation Surface runoff, runoff from the mountain drains into tributaries of the Animas River. Topographic relief is significant as the summit rises nearly above the river in 1.75 mile (2.82 km). Neighbors include Bear Mountain (San Juan County, Colorado), Bear Mountain, 2.25 miles (3.62 km) to the northwest, and line parent Sultan Mountain, 0.67 mile (1.08 km) to the north-northwest. Description Bear Mountain is situated 3.5 miles west-southwest of the community of Silverton, on land managed by San Juan National Forest. Bear Mountain is part of the San Juan Mountains which are a subset of the Rocky Mountains and is west of the Continental Divide. Precipitation runoff from the mountain drains into Bear Creek and South Fork Mineral Creek which are tributaries of the Animas River. Topographic relief is significant as the north aspect rises above South Fork Mineral Creek in approximately 1.5 mile, and the east aspect rises above Bear Creek in one-half-mile. The mountain's toponym has been officially adopted by the United States Board on Geographic Names, and has been in publications since at least 1906, if not earlier. San Juan Mountains (Colorado)
The San Juan Mountains is a high and rugged mountain range in the Rocky Mountains in southwestern Colorado and northwestern New Mexico. The area is highly mineralized (the Colorado Mineral Belt) and figured in the gold and silver mining industry of early Colorado. Major towns, all old mining camps, include Creede, Lake City, Silverton, Ouray, and Telluride. Large scale mining has ended in the region, although independent prospectors still work claims throughout the range. The last large scale mines were the Sunnyside Mine near Silverton, which operated until late in the 20th century and the Idarado Mine on Red Mountain Pass that closed down in the 1970s. Famous old San Juan mines include the Camp Bird and Smuggler Union mines, both located between Telluride and Ouray. In mountaineering in the United States, a thirteener (abbreviated 13er) is a mountain that exceeds above mean sea level, similar to the more familiar "fourteeners," which exceed . In most instances, "thirteeners" refers only to those peaks between 13,000 and 13,999 feet in elevation. The importance of thirteeners is greatest in Colorado, which has the majority of such peaks in North America with over 600 of them. Despite the large number of peaks, over 20 peak baggers have reported climbing all of Colorado's thirteeners. Thirteeners are also significant in states whose highpoints fall between 13,000 and 13,999 feet. The Köppen climate classification is one of the most widely used climate classification systems. It was first published by German-Russian climatologist Wladimir Köppen (1846–1940) in 1884, with several later modifications by Köppen, notably in 1918 and 1936. Later, the climatologist Rudolf Geiger (1894–1981) introduced some changes to the classification system, which is thus sometimes called the Köppen–Geiger climate classification system. Line Parent
A peak's line parent is the closest higher peak on the highest ridge leading away from the peak's "key col". A col is the lowest point on the ridge between two summits and is roughly synonymous with pass, gap, saddle and notch. The highest col of a peak is its key col. If there is more than one ridge which can be followed to a higher peak then the line parent is the peak closest to the key col. Usually, a line parent must meet some prominence criteria, which might vary depending on the author and the location of the peak. There are at least two other kinds of peak parentage.
