The Grand Army of the Republic Hall, also known as John M. Hagadorn Post No. 505, Grand Army of the Republic and the Schuyler F. Smith Camp No. 193, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, and Halsey Valley Grand Army of the Republic Meeting Hall, is an historic building located on Hamilton Valley Road in Halsey Valley near Spencer, New York, in the United States. The hall was built in 1894 and on January 23, 2003, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Original use The hall was the meeting place of the John M. Hagadorn Post No. 505, which was one of 670 GAR posts in New York. It was also used as the meeting place of the Schuyler F. Smith Camp No. 193, SUVCW. Current use In September 1998, the Schuyler F. Spencer is a town in Tioga County, New York, United States. The population was 2,976 at the 2020 census. The town and its primary village are named after Ambrose Spencer. It lies on the western border of the county and is south of Ithaca. Inside the town is the Village of Spencer. The village of Candor borders the town to the east and southeast, with Waverly to the southwest and Van Etten to the west, while Danby is to the north. History The land for the town was purchased in 1791 and settlement began in 1794. When the town was organized in 1806 from the Town of Tioga (the Old Town of Owego), it contained territory that is now in more newly organized towns: Candor (1811), Caroline (1811), Danby (1811), Newfield (1811), and Cayuta (1824) in Tioga and other counties. The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was a fraternal organization composed of veterans of the Union Army (United States Army), Union Navy (U.S. Navy), and the Marines who served in the American Civil War. Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) is an American congressionally chartered fraternal organization that carries out activities to preserve the history and legacy of the United States Armed Forces veterans who fought during the Civil War. It is the legal successor to the Grand Army of the Republic, the large and influential grouping of Union Army veterans that existed in the decades following the Civil War. Most SUVCW activities occur at the "Camp", or local community, level. In turn, Camps are grouped into state and/or regional structures called "Departments". Spencer is a village located in the Town of Spencer in Tioga County, New York, United States. The population was 759 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Binghamton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town and village are named after Judge Ambrose Spencer. The Village of Spencer is located in the center of the town and is south of Ithaca. History The village is the location for the first settlement of the town, around 1794.
