Bettisia Gozzadini
Bettisia Gozzadini (1209 – 2 November 1261) was a jurist who lectured at the University of Bologna from about 1239. She is thought to be the first woman to have taught at a university. Life Gozzadini was born in the commune of Bologna, in northern Italy, in 1209; her parents, Amadore Gozzadini and Adelasia de' Pegolotti, were of the nobility. Gozzadini studied philosophy, and then studied law under Giacomo Baldavino and Tancred of Bologna at the Studium of Bologna, where she also received encouragement from Odofredo. As a young woman she dressed as a man; it is not known whether this was because of social pressures, or was from personal choice. She graduated from the university in 1237, and for two years taught law at her home. She was offered chair at the Studium, which at first she declined, but later accepted. Giovanni Gozzadini
Giovanni Gozzadini (15 October 1810 – 25 August 1887) was an Italian archeologist. The last male heir of a noble family in Bologna, that had given the city men-at-arms, doctors, and jurists, Giovanni was a highly educated man in other areas such as politics. His excavations in a necropolis on his property at Villanova (Castenaso, eight kilometers south-east of Bologna), lasting from 1853 to 1855, involved 193 tombs, six of which were separated from the rest as if to signify a special social status. The "well tomb" pit graves lined with stones contained funerary urns. Thus were unearthed the first remains of the Villanovan culture, the first Iron Age culture in ancient Italy. The name Villanovan derives from that of the estate owned by Gozzadini. Marcantonio Gozzadini
Marcantonio Gozzadini (1574 – 1 September 1623) was an Italian Roman Catholic Cardinal. Biography He was born in Bologna into a patrician family. He was a cousin of Pope Gregory XV. He studied canon and civil law at the University of Bologna and started both his judicial and ecclesiastical career there, but in 1616 he was transferred to Rome as advocate of the Roman Curia. Gozzadini was created cardinal priest in the consistory of 21 July 1621 and opted for the title of Sant'Eusebio. He was also made Commander of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta by Pope Gregory XV. In 1621 he was elected Bishop of Tivoli and opted for the title of S. Agata in Suburra on 23 May 1623. On 13 March 1622 he was consecrated bishop by Ludovico Ludovisi, Archbishop of Bologna, with Galeazzo Sanvitale, Archbishop Emeritus of Bari-Canos, and Ulpiano Volpi, Bishop of Novara, serving as co-consecrators. Pope Gregory XV ( la, Gregorius XV; it, Gregorio XV; 9 January 15548 July 1623), born Alessandro Ludovisi, was head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from 9 February 1621 to his death in July 1623. Biography Early life Alessandro Ludovisi was born in Bologna on 9 January 1554 to Pompeo Ludovisi, the Count of Samoggia (now Savigno in the Province of Bologna) and of Camilla Bianchini. He was the third of seven children. He was educated at the Roman College run by the Society of Jesus in Rome and he then went to the University of Bologna to get degrees in canon and Roman law which he received on 4 June, 1575. His early career was as a papal jurist in Rome, and there is no evidence that he had been ordained to the priesthood. He returned to Rome in 1575 and he served as the Referendary of the Apostolic Signatura from 1593 to 1596 and was appointed as the Vicegerent of Rome in 1597, a position he maintained until 1598. ''Ulisse'' is an opera in a prologue and two acts composed by Luigi Dallapiccola to his own libretto based on the legend of Ulysses. It premiered at the Deutsche Oper Berlin (in German translation by Karl-Heinrich Kreith as ''Odysseus'') on 29 September 1968 conducted by Lorin Maazel with Erik Saedén in the title role.
