The Gouvernment of Atjeh and Dependencies ( nl, Gouvernement Atjeh en Onderhoorigheden) was an administrative subdivision (governorate) of the Dutch East Indies located in northern Sumatra in the region of present-day Aceh, Indonesia which existed from the late nineteenth century to 1938. The capital of the governorate was at Koetaradja (now called Banda Aceh). In 1938, due to a reorganization of the government structure of the Indies, it no longer had a governor and became a Residency instead, called the Atjeh and Dependencies Residency ( nl, Residentie Atjeh en Onderhoorigheden). History The Governorate of Atjeh and Dependencies was created by the Dutch during the Aceh War in the territory of the Aceh Sultanate which they were attempting to conquer; thus although it was created in the late nineteenth century it did not control a large territory for some time. Calang ( Jawoë: چالڠ), the capital of the Aceh Jaya Regency of the special territory (''daerah istimewa'') of Aceh was on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. It had a population of about 12,000 though it was reported to have ''"vanished completely leaving only scattered shards of concrete"'' as a result of the tsunami produced by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake. Only about 30 per cent of the townspeople have survived. The trail of destruction left by the tsunami extends two kilometers inland from the coast. Whole hills have been washed away. Gayo Lues Regency ( id, Kabupaten Gayo Lues) is a Regencies of Indonesia, regency in the Aceh Special Region of Indonesia. It is located on the island of Sumatra.
