Harry Gourlay (umpire)
Henry William Gourlay (16 October 1895 – 17 August 1970) was a New Zealand cricket umpire and schoolteacher. Gourlay stood in one Test match, New Zealand vs. Australia, in Wellington in 1946. In all he umpired 12 first-class matches, most of them in Christchurch, between 1944 and 1950. Gourlay was educated at Addington School and Christchurch West High School and gained a Master of Science degree at Canterbury University College. He served as a pupil-teacher at Addington School, and later compiled the school's history. He taught at Christchurch Boys' High School from 1919 to 1958. He landscaped the new grounds when the school moved to Riccarton in the 1920s. At the time of his retirement he was the school's senior biology master. He married Hilda Beatrice Harrison in Christchurch in December 1919. He was elected a life member of the New Zealand Rose Society in 1959. He died in Christchurch in August 1970, aged 74. Scott Gourlay (born 8 January 1971) is a former Scottish international cricketer who represented the Scottish national side between 1995 and 1999. He played as an all-rounder, bowling right-arm medium pace and batting right-handed. Gourlay was born in Kirkcaldy, and attended Bell Baxter High School in Cupar. His club cricket was played for the Freuchie Cricket Club. Gourlay made his debut for Scotland at the 1995 British Isles Championship, against Ireland. He made his List A debut the following year, playing three games in the 1996 Benson & Hedges Cup. At the 1997 ICC Trophy in Malaysia, Gourlay played in six of Scotland's nine matches, and took eight wickets. Robert Fleming Gourlay (March 24, 1778 – August 1, 1863) was a Scottish-Canadian writer, political reform activist, and agriculturalist. Early life and education Gourlay was born in Craigrothie in the Parish of Ceres, Fife, Scotland on 22 March 1778. He received a Master of Arts degree from the University of St. Andrews and studied agriculture at the University of Edinburgh. He managed one of his father's farms from 1800 to 1809 and leased a farm from the Duke of Somerset from 1809 to 1817. Gourlay's sympathies lay with the poor farmer, who he saw as being imprisoned by landlords and the system of government. In 1801, he was employed by the British imperial government to make inquiries into the condition of the British poor. His report prompted a bill to be introduced into the British House of Commons and adopted, but it was rejected by the House of Lords. Robert Gourlay or Robin Gourlaw (c. 1530-c. 1600) was a wealthy Edinburgh merchant and Customar of Edinburgh who built a renowned house in Edinburgh (now demolished). Life Robert Gourlay is first recorded in the employ of Regent Arran as a Groom of the Chamber and Wardrobe and was sometimes called the Regent's "chamber Child". The Regent bought clothes to wear and a horse to travel with, a measure of his importance in the household. In January 1552 he was called "Keeper of the Wardrobe". Mary Perceval Gourlay ODE (14 May 1898 – 1 October 1990), better known as Molly Gourlay, was a British golfer who won several international championships. She was the first female golf course architect in Britain, and after World War II was active in national ladies' golf associations. Janet A. Gourlay (1863–1912) was a Scottish Egyptologist, that is most well known for her excavation of and publication on the Mut Complex in Egypt. Janet was born on January 30, 1863, in Dundee, Scotland, to Henry G. Gourlay and Agnes Christine Burell. Later in life, she briefly studied at University College, London in 1893, with William Matthew Flinders Petrie, the pioneering archaeologist, and Margaret Murray. Personal life Janet would meet her lifelong partner Margaret Benson in 1896 during the second excavation of the Mut Complex. The pair were introduced by Lady Jane Lindsay. In conjunction with their social relationship, they formed a scientific partnership that benefitted the pair and allowed them to continue their work in Egypt.
