Gotland School Of Music Composition
{{no footnotes, date=August 2012 The Gotland School of Music Composition (sv. ''Gotlands tonsättarskola'') is a folk high school for musical Musical composition, composition based in Visby, Gotland. The school offers two educational programs Course in Composition (2 years) and Composition – Contemporary (1 year). The school endeavours to achieve a creative environment for young composers. There are pianos, a music studio for electroacoustic music and a music library. The composer Mattias Svensson Sandell is the educational leader. Composers such as Per Mårtensson and Henrik Strindberg hold seminars and individual lessons on a weekly basis. Sweden's most famous living composer Sven-David Sandström previously worked at the school. Every year the students arrange the "Ljudvågor" music festival, during which professional musicians perform the students' music. Henrik Strindberg
Henrik Strindberg (born 28 March 1954) is a Swedish composer of contemporary music. He studied composition at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm from 1980 to 1987 where he studied for Gunnar Bucht and Sven-David Sandström amongst others. In 1985 he also participated in a summer course with Iannis Xenakis in Delphi. Apart from composing, he has been a member of the progressive rock band Ragnarök since the 1970s. His music has been performed by acclaimed ensembles such as Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Kroumata, Sonanza and The Gothenburg Combo. Sofia Jernberg
Sofia Jernberg (born 5 July 1983, in Ethiopia) is a Swedish experimental singer, improviser, and composer. She is widely known for expanding the "instrumental" possibilities of the voice and is active both as soloist and in various bands. Her musical partners include internationally acclaimed performers such as Peter Evans, Eve Risser, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Kim Myhr and Heiner Goebbels. Between 2002 and 2004, Jernberg studied jazz at Fridhems Folk High School. Later she studied for Per Mårtensson and Henrik Strindberg at The Gotland School of Music Composition. In 2008, she received the Royal Swedish Academy of Music's jazz award. Jernberg is the leader (together with the pianist Cecilia Persson) of the chamber jazz group Paavo. The Monday Group
The Monday Group (sv. Måndagsgruppen) was an influential group of Swedish composers, musicians and musicologists. The group was formed in 1944 and gathered a group of young composers in the apartment of the group's leader Karl-Birger Blomdahl. During the meetings the members discussed music aesthetics and compositional process and technique, in particular Paul Hindemith's ''Unterweisung im Tonsatz''. The core of the group consisted of Karl-Birger Blomdahl, Sven-Erik Bäck, Sven-Eric Johanson, Ingvar Lidholm, Claude Loyola Allgén and Hans Leygraf. Jan Risberg
Jan Risberg (born 5 April 1953) is a Swedish Grammis-awarded conductor, oboe, oboist and composer. Risberg has worked with several major orchestras including Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Malmö Symfoniorkester, Helsingborgs symfoniorkester, and Norrköpings Symfoniorkester. He is also the leader and conductor of the contemporary chamber ensemble Sonanza. He is one of the most prominent conductors within contemporary music in Sweden which has resulted in over 50 world premieres of pieces by composers such as Georg Riedel (Swedish jazz musician), Georg Riedel and Benjamin Staern. In 2010, Risberg and Sonanza won the Grammis award in the category "best classical" album. One year later, he received Swedish Society of Composers's "interpretation-price". Norrbotten NEO
Norrbotten NEO is a Swedish foremost chamber ensemble dedicated to contemporary classical music. Nordic Council Music Prize nominee. The ensemble was formed 2007 and is based in the concert hall Studio Acusticum in Piteå, Sweden. NEO regularly collaborates with contemporary composers and commission new works on a yearly basis. Sven-David Sandström
Sven-David Sandström (30 October 1942, in Motala – 10 June 2019) was a Swedish classical composer of operas, oratorios, ballets, and choral works, as well as orchestral works. Life and career Sandström studied art history and musicology at Stockholm University. He also studied musical composition at the Royal College of Music, Stockholm. He was a faculty member at the Royal College of Music, Stockholm, and Indiana University Bloomington's Jacobs School of Music, where he taught for fifteen years. Among his works are ''The High Mass'', a Requiem, concertos for flute, guitar, piano, and cello, and the 2001 opera, '' Jeppe: The Cruel Comedy'' on a libretto and originally directed by Claes Fellbom, who commissioned the work for the centennial of the Swedish opera company. Fellbom translated the opera into English and directed its first production in that language at Indiana University in February 2003. Per Mårtensson (born 1967 in Östersund) is a Swedish composer and teacher. He is artistic director and teaches composition at The Gotland School of Music Composition.
