Charles Albert Eric Goodhart, (born 23 October 1936) is a British economist. His career can be divided into two sections: his term with the Bank of England and its associated public policy; and his academic work with the London School of Economics. Arthur Lehman Goodhart
Arthur Lehman Goodhart (1 March 1891 in New York City – 10 November 1978 in Oxford) was an American-born academic jurist and lawyer; he was Professor of Jurisprudence at the University of Oxford, 1931–51, when he was also a Fellow of University College, Oxford. He was the first American to be the Master of an Oxford college, and was a significant benefactor to the college. Harry Goodhart
Harry Chester Goodhart (17 July 1858 – 21 April 1895) was an English amateur footballer who played as a forward in four FA Cup Finals for Old Etonians, before going on to become Professor of Humanity at the University of Edinburgh. Early life and education Goodhart was born in Wimbledon, the son of Charles Woide Goodhart (1829–1914), and educated at Eton College. He played for the college football team in 1877 and also represented the college in cricket. He made his first cricket appearance for the college in June 1876 and played throughout that summer and the following. His finest spell came in July 1876 when he scored 55 against I Zingari and 51 against Harrow School in consecutive matches. William Howard Goodhart, Baron Goodhart, (18 January 1933 – 10 January 2017) was a British Liberal Democrat politician, a leading property and human rights lawyer, and a member of the House of Lords. Background and early life and career William Goodhart was the son of Arthur Lehman Goodhart, and the brother of Charles Goodhart and Sir Philip Goodhart. He was educated at Eton College, undertook national service from 1951 to 1953, and graduated with a law degree from Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1956, before winning a Harkness Fellowship to study law at Harvard University. David Goodhart (born 12 September 1956) is a British journalist, commentator and author. He is the founder and a former editor of '' Prospect'' magazine. Early life and education Goodhart is one of seven children born to Valerie Forbes Winant (the niece of John Gilbert Winant) and Conservative MP Sir Philip Goodhart. Goodhart's law is an adage often stated as, "When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure". It is named after British economist Charles Goodhart, who is credited with expressing the core idea of the adage in a 1975 article on monetary policy in the United Kingdom: It was used to criticize the British Thatcher government for trying to conduct monetary policy on the basis of targets for broad and narrow money, but the law reflects a much more general phenomenon. Priority and background Numerous concepts are related to this idea, at least one of which predates Goodhart's statement. Rear Admiral Hilary Charles Nicholas Goodhart CB FRAeS (28 September 1919 – 9 April 2011) was an engineer and aviator who invented the mirror-sight deck landing system for aircraft carriers. Harry Stuart Goodhart-Rendel (1887 in Cambridge – 21 June 1959 in Westminster, London) was a British architect, writer and musician. Life Harry Stuart Goodhart was born on 29 May 1887 in Cambridge, England. He added the additional name Rendel by royal licence in 1902. He was educated at Eton College, and read music at Trinity College, Cambridge. He worked briefly for Sir Charles Nicholson, and then set up his own architectural practice. He is known for his church projects. He was Oxford's Slade Professor of Fine Art, from 1933 to 1936. James Goodhart (1845–1916) was an English physician whose work extended into various medical fields, including morbid pathology and paediatrics. He held positions in a number of London hospitals and institutions, including Guy's Hospital and the Evelina Hospital for Sick Children. Goodhart Newbury Manflier
The Goodhart ''Newbury Manflier'' was a two-place human-powered aircraft designed by Nicholas Goodhart. Its most notable feature was that the two pilots were placed in separate fuselages, spaced 70 ft apart. Design and development The genesis of the aircraft was detailed in a paper presented at a 1974 conference hosted by the Man-Powered Aircraft Group of the Royal Aeronautical Society, and later published in its Journal. In the paper, after initially describing the requirements for an aircraft to win the Kremer Prize then on offer, Goodhart proposed a two-person monoplane, with a 100 ft wingspan, with each pilot being located in separate nacelles at the wingtips. This configuration would reduce the bending moments on the wing spar, and hence the overall weight.
