Gondwania Joannae
''Gondwania'' is a genus of lichen-forming fungi in the subfamily Xanthorioideae of the family Teloschistaceae. It has five species. Taxonomy The genus was circumscribed by lichenologists Ulrik Søchting, Patrik Frödén, and Ulf Arup. The type species is '' G. cribrosa'', a species that was first named ''Polycauliona cribrosa'' by Auguste-Marie Hue in 1909. The genus name refers to the ancestral supercontinent Gondwana. Description ''Gondwania'' species grow on rock, and have a variety of forms: , somewhat fruticose, or crustose. Species contain lichen products characteristic of  A. '' Cerothallis'' and ''Austroplaca'' are closely related genera in the Teloschistaceae. ''Gondwania'' has a Southern Hemisphere distribution, occurring in the Antarctic, southern Australia, New Zealand, and Patagonia. Auguste-Marie Hue
Father Auguste-Marie Hue (15 August 1840– 22 June 1917) was a French lichenologist. Biography Hue was born on 15 August 1840, in Saint-Saëns, Seine-Maritime. He was Ordination, ordained as a priest in 1865. From 1890 to 1915 he was a chaplain at the Petites Sœurs des Pauvres in Levallois-Perret. He studied the lichens collected by the Philippe Thomas#Career, scientific expedition to Tunisia, the reports of which were published by Narcisse Théophile Patouillard (1854–1926). He also studied the lichens brought back by the French Antarctic Expeditions (1903–1905 and 1908–1910), commanded by Jean-Baptiste Charcot (1867–1936). Father (1832–1900) sent him specimens collected in Louisiana. Hue has been credited for having introduced the lichen term in an 1906 publication. Lichen Product
Lichen products, also known as lichen substances, are organic compounds produced by a lichen. Specifically, they are secondary metabolites. Lichen products are represented in several different chemical classes, including terpenoids, orcinol derivatives, chromones, xanthones, depsides, and depsidones. Over 800 lichen products of known chemical structure have been reported in the scientific literature, and most of these compound are exclusively found in lichens. Examples of lichen products include usnic acid (a dibenzofuran), atranorin (a depside), lichexanthone (a xanthone), salazinic acid (a depsidone), and isolichenan, an α-glucan.
