Golub (film)
''Golub'' is a 1988 documentary film, produced by Kartemquin Films, that examines the life and work of controversial painter, Leon Golub. Inspired by war, political oppression and the fight for Free Speech, Golub and his paintings are famous for their depictions of extreme violence. Also featured prominently in the film is his wife, anti-war feminist and artist, Nancy Spero. The documentary tracks Golub from starting with a blank canvas to a touring North American exhibition and eventually to an exhibition in Northern Ireland. In 2001, the filmmakers revisited Leon Golub in his final years, and in 2004 released the documentary, ''Golub: Late Works Are The Catastrophes''. With his previous work being more relevant than ever in the aftermath of September 11, Golub's later paintings have become less graphic and violent. Gordon Quinn
Gordon Quinn is Artistic Director and founding member of Kartemquin Films and a 2007 recipient of the MacArthur Award for Creative and Effective Institutions. Gordon Quinn has been making documentaries for over 45 years and has produced or directed over 30 films. His recent directing credits include ''Prisoner of Her Past'' and '' A Good Man''. His producing credits include the films ''Hoop Dreams''; '' In the Family'';''Vietnam, Long Time Coming''; ''Golub: Late Works Are the Catastrophes''; '' 5 Girls''; ''Refrigerator Mothers''; and '' Stevie''. Most recently, Gordon executive produced '' Mapping Stem Cell Research: Terra Incognita'' and ''The New Americans'', for which he directed the Palestinian segment. Leon Golub
Leon Golub (January 23, 1922 – August 8, 2004) was an American painter. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, where he also studied, receiving his Bachelor of Arts, BA at the University of Chicago in 1942, and his Bachelor of Fine Arts, BFA and Master of Fine Arts, MFA at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1949 and 1950, respectively. He was married to and collaborated with the artist Nancy Spero (August 24, 1926 – October 18, 2009). Their son Stephen Golub was an economics professor at Swarthmore College. Their son Philip Golub is Professor of International and Comparative Politics at the American University of Paris and was a longstanding contributing editor of the influential journal ''Le Monde diplomatique''. Nancy Spero
Nancy Spero (August 24, 1926 – October 18, 2009) was an American visual artist. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Spero lived for much of her life in New York City. She married and collaborated with artist Leon Golub. As both artist and activist, Nancy Spero had a career that spanned fifty years. She is known for her continuous engagement with contemporary political, social, and cultural concerns. Spero chronicled wars and apocalyptic violence as well as articulating visions of ecstatic rebirth and the celebratory cycles of life. Her complex network of collective and individual voices was a catalyst for the creation of her figurative lexicon representing women from prehistory to the present in such epic-scale paintings and collage on paper as ''Torture of Women'' (1976), ''Notes in Time on Women'' (1979) and ''The First Language'' (1981).
