Gold Strike (horse)
Gold Strike (foaled 2002 in Manitoba) is a Canadian Thoroughbred Champion racehorse. Bred and raced by Dick Bonnycastle's Harlequin Ranches, she was out of the mare, Brassy Gold. Her sire was the outstanding Smart Strike, a two-time leading sire in North America who also sired Curlin, Soaring Free, and English Channel, among others. Gold Strike is the dam of 2022 Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike. Racing career At age two in 2004, Gold Strike raced at Assiniboia Downs in Winnipeg, Manitoba for trainer Blair Miller where she won two of her three starts. Her wins came in the Buffalo Stakes plus a 15¾ length romp in the Debutante Stakes. Voted the 2004 CTHS Manitoba-bred Champion 2-Year-Old Filly, in October of that year she was sent to Toronto's Woodbine Racetrack where her race conditioning for the 2005 campaign was handled by Reade Baker. Smart Strike
Smart Strike (foaled May 21, 1992 in Ontario – died March 25, 2015) was a Canadian Thoroughbred racehorse. The son of the Champion sire, Mr. Prospector, and out of the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame mare Classy 'n Smart, Smart Strike is a half-brother to 1991 Canadian Triple Crown champion Dance Smartly. Owned and bred by Sam-Son Farm, on the racetrack, Smart Strike's most important win came in the Grade I Philip H. Iselin Handicap. Soaring Free (foaled January 28, 1999 in Ontario) is a retired Canadian Champion Thoroughbred racehorse. Background Soaring Free was bred and raced by one of Canada's leading Thoroughbred operations, Sam-Son Farm. He was out of the mare Dancing With Wings, a daughter of three-time Champion Sire, Danzig. Soaring Free's sire is the increasingly influential Smart Strike who also sired Eclipse Award winner English Channel and the 2007 American Horse of the Year, Curlin. Hendrie Stakes
The Hendrie Stakes is a Thoroughbred horse race run annually at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Held in mid May, the Grade III sprint race is open to fillies and mares, aged four and older and is contested over a distance of six and a half furlongs on Polytrack synthetic dirt. It offers a purse of $116,205 with an additional $50,000 for Ontario-bred horses provided by the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (CTHS) through its Thoroughbred Improvement Program (TIP). It was inaugurated in 1975 and run at the Fort Erie Racetrack for the first two years as the George C. Hendrie Handicap in honor of George Campbell Hendrie. Queen's Plate
The King's Plate (known as the Queen's Plate between 1860 to 1901 and 1952 to 2022) is Canada's oldest Thoroughbred horse race, having been founded in 1860. It is also the oldest continuously run race in North America. It is run at a distance of for a maximum of 17 three-year-old Thoroughbred horses foaled in Canada. The race takes place each summer at Woodbine Racetrack in Etobicoke, Ontario. It is the first race in the Canadian Triple Crown. The King's Plate has typically been held in June or July, but in 2020 the race was postponed to September due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada. Woodbine Racetrack is a race track for Thoroughbred horse racing in the Etobicoke area of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Owned by Woodbine Entertainment Group, Woodbine Racetrack manages and hosts Canada's most famous race, the King's Plate.
