Gold Hill, British Columbia
Gold Hill or Goldhill is a ghost town in the West Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia. The former mining community is on the northeast side of the Lardeau River. The locality, on BC Highway 31, is about northwest of Lardeau (head of Kootenay Lake) and southeast of Gerrard. Name origin In the 1890s, the trail from Lardeau to Trout Lake joined the Lardeau River at Cascade Creek, just upstream from the future Gold Hill. Second Crossing was the original name, being the second place the railway crossed the river. In 1903, Edward Mobbs established a town during the goldrush, which he called Uto, but then renamed as Goldhill within days. Some early newspaper reports did not clearly differentiate between the crossing and Bosworth, which might suggest the commercial enterprises were found somewhere in between. Lardeau, British Columbia
Lardeau is an unincorporated community, and former mining town and steamboat landing. The settlement is on the west shore near the head of Kootenay Lake in the West Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia. Lardo and Lardeau were used interchangeably for decades before the latter spelling for the settlement prevailed. The earliest reference to the river used Lardo in 1885, but the pass used Lardeau in 1889. This likely reflects the distinction evident by the 1890s that Kootenay Lake settlers preferred Lardo, but those closer to Upper Arrow Lake were more accustomed to Lardeau. Of the numerous theories, one is that early prospectors adopted Lardo to signify a rich or fat land, deriving from the vulgar meaning for a person who was a rich or fat prospect. Poplar Creek, British Columbia
Poplar Creek is a ghost town in the West Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia. The former mining community is at the mouth of Popular Creek on the southwest side of the Lardeau River. The locality, on BC Highway 31, is about northwest of Lardeau (head of Kootenay Lake) and southeast of Gerrard. Name origin The settlement, also known as Poplar City or Poplar, was named after the creek. Both sides of the creek were lined with Balm of Gilead trees, which early prospectors mistook for poplar. Mining In the early 1860s, placer mining occurred at the creek mouth. Staked before 1903, the Spyglass claim lay about upstream from the mouth. A reaction ferry is a cable ferry that uses the reaction of the current of a river against a fixed tether to propel the vessel across the water. Such ferries operate faster and more effectively in rivers with strong currents. Some reaction ferries operate using an overhead cable suspended from towers anchored on either bank of the river. Others use a floating cable attached to a single anchorage that may be on one bank or mid-channel. Where an overhead cable is used a "traveller" is usually installed on the cable and the ferry is attached to the traveller by a bridle cable. Trout Lake (British Columbia)
Trout Lake is a ribbon lake in the West Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia. Between the Selkirk Mountains to the west and the Purcell Mountains to the east, the lake is about long and wide. Lardeau Creek flows into the northern end and Lardeau River flows from the southern end. BC Highway 31 skirts the northeast shore. The northern end is about by road and ferry southeast of Revelstoke. Name origin In 1865, explorer James Turnbull noted in his diary a journey beside Lake de Truite, but did not indicate how he knew the lake's French name, only that the waters abounded in trout. Gerrard is a ghost town in the West Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia. The settlement was at the south end of Trout Lake, east of Upper Arrow Lake. Honouring banker George Bentley Gerrard, prior names were Selkirk and Twin Falls. The Canadian Pacific Railway's (CPR) Kootenay and Arrowhead Railway from Lardeau northwest to the terminus at Gerrard opened in 1902, where it connected with vessels on Trout Lake. Kootenay Lake
Kootenay Lake is a lake located in British Columbia, Canada. It is part of the Kootenay River. British Columbia Highway 31
Highway 31 is a slightly minor north-south highway through the Selkirk Mountains in British Columbia, Canada. The highway first gained its number in 1973, and it is one of the few numbered highways in the province that is not fully paved.
