''Going to the Ritual'' is a live album by bassist Henry Grimes and drummer Rashied Ali. It was recorded in 2007 in concert at WKCR studios, Columbia University, New York City, and was released by Porter Records in 2008. Reception In a review for AllMusic, Michael G. Nastos wrote: "In one of the last recordings before he passed away, drummer Rashied Ali proves with every slash, riff, and paradiddle why he belonged in the pantheon of improvising percussionists well past his time with John Coltrane. In duets with well-matched partner and bassist Henry Grimes, this set shows how locked in these natives of Philadelphia... are with their estimable heritage in making free jazz that still sounds fresh some 50 years after the movement was founded. Henry Grimes
Henry Grimes (November 3, 1935 – April 15, 2020) was an American jazz double bassist and violinist. After more than a decade of activity and performance, notably as a leading bassist in free jazz, Grimes completely disappeared from the music scene by 1970. Grimes was often presumed to have died, but he was discovered in 2002 and returned to performing. Biography Early life and career Henry Alonzo Grimes was born in Philadelphia, to parents who both had been musicians in their youth. He took up the violin at the age of 12, and then began playing tuba, English horn, percussion, finally switching to the double bass at Mastbaum Technical High School. He furthered his musical studies at Juilliard and established a reputation as a versatile bassist by the mid-1950s. Rashied Ali, born Robert Patterson (July 1, 1933 – August 12, 2009) was an American free jazz and avant-garde drummer best known for playing with John Coltrane in the last years of Coltrane's life. Biography Early life Patterson was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His family was musical; his mother sang with Jimmie Lunceford. His brother, Muhammad Ali, is also a drummer, who played with Albert Ayler. Ali, his brother, and his father converted to Islam. Starting off as a pianist he eventually took up the drums, via trumpet and trombone. He joined the United States Army and played with military bands during the Korean War. After his military service, he returned home and studied with Philly Joe Jones, then toured with Sonny Rollins. Career Ali moved to New York in 1963 and worked in groups with Bill Dixon and Paul Bley. Jazz
Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with its roots in blues and ragtime. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, it has been recognized as a major form of musical expression in traditional and popular music. Judgment Day (album)
''Judgment Day'', Volumes 1 and 2, is a pair of albums by the Rashied Ali Quintet, led by drummer Ali, and featuring saxophonist Lawrence Clark, trumpeter Jumaane Smith, pianist Greg Murphy, and bassist Joris Teepe. They were recorded on February 17 and 18, 2005, at Survival Studio in New York City, and were released in 2006 by Ali's Survival Records. In comparison with Ali's previous releases, the music on ''Judgment Day'' is relatively straight-ahead. However, regarding his role in the quintet, Ali noted: "It's not like I'm playing really straight-ahead drums. It might sound like that on the surface, but underneath you'll hear a lot of stuff that says I'm really an avant-garde player." Reception In a review for AllMusic, Michael G. Nastos called Volume 1 "a rock-solid recording from beginning to end" and "a crown jewel in Ali's small discography," noting that "all of those interested in modern mainstream jazz should pay close attention to it." WKCR-FM (89.9 FM) is a radio station licensed to New York, New York, United States. The station is owned by Columbia University and serves the New York metropolitan area. Founded in 1941, the station traces its history back to 1908 with the first operations of the Columbia University Radio Club (CURC). ''All About Jazz'' is a website established by Michael Ricci in 1995. A volunteer staff publishes news, album reviews, articles, videos, and listings of concerts and other events having to do with jazz. Ricci maintains a related site, ''Jazz Near You'', about local concerts and events. The Jazz Journalists Association voted ''All About Jazz'' Best Website Covering Jazz for thirteen consecutive years between 2003 and 2015, when the category was retired.
