Goar
Goar (born before 390, died between 446 and 450) was a leader of the Alans in 5th-century Gaul. Around the time that the Vandals and other Alans under Respendial crossed the Rhine in 405 or 406, Goar's band of Alans quickly joined the Romans, and subsequently played a role in the internal politics of Gaul. Biography Joining the Romans Goar is first mentioned as 'Goare' in the Frigeridus fragment, embedded in Gregory of Tours's work, describing the Vandal–Frankish war that preceded the Crossing of the Rhine (the crossing was dated to 31 December 406 by Prosper of Aquitaine). According to Frigeridus, the Roman-allied Franks were inflicting heavy casualties on the Vandals over the course of probably several battles, killing 20,000 Vandal warriors and their king Godigisel, and were on the verge of exterminating the tribe. Goar Of Aquitaine
Saint Goar of Aquitaine ( la, Goaris; 585 – 6 July 649 AD) was a priest and hermit of the seventh century. He was offered the position of Bishop of Trier, but prayed to be excused from the position. Goar is noted for his piety and is revered as a miracle-worker. He is a patron saint of innkeepers, potters, and vine growers. Life Goar was born in 585 to a noble family in Aquitaine, and was noted for piety even in his youth. When he was finally ordained a priest, he became famous for his forceful preaching. However, Goar wanted to serve God more discreetly, and so traveled abroad to the diocese of Trier in 618 to become a hermit near the town of Oberwesel. Goar Mestre Espinosa (born December 25, 1912 – March 23, 1994) was a Cuban-born Argentine businessman, remembered as one of the pioneers of the audiovisual industry in Latin America. Goar Levonovna Vartanian ( hy, Գոհար Լևոնի Վարդանյան russian: Гоар Левоновна Вартанян; 25 January 1926 – 25 November 2019) was an Armenian woman who spied for the Soviet Union together with her husband Gevork Vartanian. Biography Vartanian was born Goar Levonovna Pahlevanyan (russian: Гоар Левоновна Пахлеванян), in Gyumri, in what was then the Transcaucasian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic in the Soviet Union and is now Armenia. After her family moved to Tehran, Iran in the early 1930s, she changed her surname to Kandaryan (russian: Кандарян), where she met her future husband Gevork. She became a member of an anti-fascist group in 1942. They uncovered and prevented Operation Long Jump, an attempt by the Nazis to murder Joseph Stalin, Winston Churchill, and Franklin Roosevelt at the Tehran Conference in 1943. Jacques Goar (1601 – 23 September 1653) was a French Dominican Order, Dominican and Hellenism (Academia), Hellenist. Life He was born at Paris, entered the convent of the Annunciation in the Rue St. Honoré in 1619, and made his profession there 24 May 1620. Although lector of philosophy and theology, he applied himself to the study of Greek. He was sent to the Orient by his superiors, that he might eventually render service to the Roman Church, through his knowledge of the ecclesiastical documents and the positive theology of the Greeks. He resided at Chios as missionary Apostolic and prior of the Convent of St. Sebastian (1613–39). Jim W. Goar (born 1975) is an American contemporary poet. Biography Goar was born in San Francisco and educated at Naropa University, where he received a Master of Fine Arts degree, and the University of East Anglia, where he received a PhD. In 2006, effing press made his chapbook, ''Whole Milk''. Of this collection Scott Glassman at Rain Taxi stated that Goar's "clause-free declarative sentences are a perfect match for the edgy grade-school surrealism which guides us into emotional revelation.” Jordan Davis, in his Constant Critic article, included it amongst his best texts of the year. Joshua Mercer Goar (January 31, 1870 – April 4, 1947), was an American professional baseball player who was a pitcher in the National League in 1896 and 1898. Listed at and , he threw and batted right-handed. Biography Goar pitched in four major league games; three games for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1896 and one game for the Cincinnati Reds in 1898, all in relief. In a total of innings pitched, he allowed 40 hits and 36 runs while striking out three batters and walking nine batters. As a batter, he had one hit in six at bats for a .167 batting average. Minor league records, incomplete for the era, list Goar as playing in the Western League during 1895–1897, and for the Indianapolis Hoosiers in 1900. Goar is noted for an unusual inning pitched when playing for the minor-league Anderson Tigers in the Indiana State League. Sankt Goar is a town on the west bank of the Middle Rhine in the Rhein-Hunsrück-Kreis (Districts of Germany, district) in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It belongs to the ''Verbandsgemeinde'' Hunsrück-Mittelrhein, whose seat is in Emmelshausen. Sankt Goar is well known for its central location in the Rhine Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2002.
