Goalball At The 2016 Summer Paralympics
Goalball was an event contested at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro. Medallists Qualifying 10 men's and 10 women's teams qualified for the Games. Men Women Men's tournament Competition format The ten men's teams were divided into two equal groups for a single round robin group stage. The top four teams of each group advanced to the quarter finals. All matches in the second stage were knock-out format. Matthew Simpson (born March 30, 1990) is an American goalball player. Simpson represented the United States at the 2016 Summer Paralympics and won a silver medal. Early life When Simpson was about a year old, he began moving his eye in unusual ways. The doctors who first examined him believed it was a condition he would grow out of, but once he started sitting unusually close to the family television, his parents suspected a more serious condition. When he was 4 years old, he was diagnosed with a degenerative retinal condition that would eventually leave him blind. In later years, Simpson would consider learning about his diagnosis that early to be a blessing in disguise, telling an interviewer for a University of Virginia publication in 2019, "As a kid, you don’t really think about it. Gülşah Düzgün (born Gülşah Aktürk on 25 September 1995) is a Turkish female Paralympian goalball player. She is a member of the national team. Private life Gülşah Düzgün was born to İsmail Aktürk and his spouse Mğrvet on 25 September 1995. She completed her secondary education in a school for the blinds and visually impaired. She is married to her club mate Tekin Okan Düzgün, also a visually impaired sportsman and a national goalball player. In 2018, she gave birth to a daughter, Elif Bera.
