__NOTOC__ Gmina Janów is a rural gmina (administrative district) in Sokółka County, Podlaskie Voivodeship, in north-eastern Poland. Its seat is the village of Janów, which lies approximately west of Sokółka and north of the regional capital Białystok. The gmina covers an area of , and as of 2006 its total population is 4,427. The gmina contains part of the protected area called Knyszyń Forest Landscape Park. History Since 13th age to 1795 Gmina Janów was part of Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The gmina (Polish: , plural ''gminy'' , from German ''Gemeinde'' meaning ''commune'') is the principal unit of the administrative division of Poland, similar to a municipality. , there were 2,477 gminas throughout the country, encompassing over 43,000 villages. 940 gminas include cities and towns, with 302 among them constituting an independent urban gmina ( pl, gmina miejska) consisting solely of a standalone town or one of the 107 cities, the latter governed by a city mayor (''prezydent miasta'').
