Glimmerglass Historic District is a national historic district located near Cooperstown in Otsego County, New York. The district encompasses parts of three towns, Otsego, Springfield, and Middlefield and the village of Cooperstown. It encompasses the physical and social sphere of Otsego Lake and its immediate environs. It includes 1,475 contributing features, some of which were previously listed including the Cooperstown Historic District, U.S. Post Office (Cooperstown, New York), and Hyde Hall in Glimmerglass State Park. Cooperstown, New York
Cooperstown is a village in and county seat of Otsego County, New York, United States. Most of the village lies within the town of Otsego, but some of the eastern part is in the town of Middlefield. Located at the foot of Otsego Lake in the Central New York Region, Cooperstown is approximately southwest of Albany, southeast of Syracuse and northwest of New York City. The population of the village was 1,852 as of the 2010 census. Cooperstown is the home of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. The Farmers' Museum in the village opened in 1944 on farmland that had once belonged to James Fenimore Cooper. The Fenimore Art Museum and Glimmerglass Opera are also based here. Otsego County is a county in the U.S. state of New York. As of the 2020 census, the population was 58,524. The county seat is Cooperstown. The name ''Otsego'' is from a Mohawk or Oneida word meaning "place of the rock." History In 1789, Ontario County was split off from Montgomery. Otsego is a town in the north-central part of Otsego County, New York, United States. The population was 3,900 at the 2010 census. The town is named after Lake Otsego, which forms part of the town's eastern border. History Gideon Hawley, a missionary, arrived in this area in 1753. The Town of Springfield is located at the northern county line of Otsego County and is approximately west of Schenectady. Middlefield is a town in Otsego County, New York, United States. The population was 2,114 at the 2010 census. The Town of Middlefield is in the northeastern part of the county. It is the largest town by area in the county. History Settlers from Scotland and Ireland moved into this area around 1755. The first settlements were made near Middlefield village, which was formed from the Town of Cherry Valley in 1797. The Phoenix cotton mill was started in 1815, but became a wool mill in 1866. Otsego Lake (New York)
Otsego Lake is a lake located in Otsego County in the U.S. state of New York. It is the source of the Susquehanna River and largest lake in Otsego County. The Village of Cooperstown is located at the lake's southern end. Glimmerglass State Park is located on the lake's northeastern shore, and includes Hyde Hall, a large mansion constructed in 1817, that overlooks the lake. The Glimmerglass Opera, opened in June 1987, is located on the western shore. Between 10,000 and 12,000 years ago, glaciers of the Wisconsin glaciation filled the valley. Otsego Lake was formed when an ice tongue from a glacier carved out the Susquehanna River Valley. As the glaciers melted slowly, they filled in the valley they carved out. The lake takes its name from the Iroquois Indians, who inhabited the area around the lake in and before the 17th century. Hyde Hall
Hyde Hall is a US neoclassical country mansion designed by architect Philip Hooker for George Clarke (1768–1835), a wealthy landowner. The house was constructed between 1817 and 1834, and designed with English and American architectural features. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986 for its architecture, and the completeness of its architectural documentary record. It is one of the few surviving works of Philip Hooker, a leading 19th-century American architect. History The George Clarke who commissioned the building was the grandson of another George Clarke (1676-1760), who held several posts in the government of the colony of New York in the first half of the 18th century, including acting governor from 1736 to 1743. Glimmerglass State Park
Glimmerglass State Park is a state park located north of Cooperstown, in Otsego County, New York. Most of the park is located inside the Town of Springfield. Park description Glimmerglass State Park is located at Hyde Bay on the east shore of Otsego Lake, which is the "Glimmerglass" lake of James Fenimore Cooper's ''Leatherstocking Tales''. The Hyde Hall mansion overlooks the bay and most of the grounds.
