Glenwood Cemetery (Huntsville, Alabama)
Glenwood Cemetery, formerly Georgia Cemetery, is a historic cemetery for African American burials founded in c. 1870 on Hall Avenue in Huntsville, Alabama. Burials include veterans, local politicians, and community leaders. History Established in c. 1870, Glenwood Cemetery succeeded a burial ground for enslaved African Americans which was north of where a hospital is now and covered by a parking lot. Recognized as a site of historical significance, a historical marker commemorates its history. A local teacher and her students have helped catalogue some of its history. About 10 acres in size, the cemetery is believed to hold between 8,000 and 10,000 burial sites. Many of them are unmarked. The cemetery and a headstone for Burgess E. Scruggs, the first licensed doctor in Alabama has been added to the Alabama State Historic Cemetery Register. Glenwood Cemetery (Maynard, Massachusetts)
Glenwood Cemetery is a historic rural cemetery northeast of Parker Street and Great Road in Maynard, Massachusetts. It is one of the first municipal creations of the town after its incorporation in 1871, and is the resting place of many of its early and prominent residents, including Amory Maynard, founder of the Assabet Woolen Mill and namesake of the community. The cemetery was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NR#04000425) on May 12, 2004. Description and history Glenwood Cemetery is located at the northeast corner of Parker Street (Massachusetts Route 27) and Great Road (Massachusetts Route 117), a short way south of the town center. It has entrance is on Great Road, roughly midway between Parker Street and Old Mill Road, and on Parker Street, nearly opposite Walker Street. Glenwood Cemetery (Flint, Michigan)
Glenwood Cemetery is a cemetery located at 2500 W Court Street in Flint, Michigan. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010. History Flint was incorporated as a city in 1855. At the time, the area cemetery was beginning to decay, so in 1857 a group of leading citizens met to plan the construction of a cemetery suitable for the new city. The group formed the Glenwood Cemetery Association. Thirty acres of land was quickly acquired, and George T. Clark hired as a civil engineer. The new Glenwood Cemetery formally dedicated in October 1857. A gateway, chapel, and receiving vault (all now long-demolished) and the sexton's office (still standing) were built soon after, and the grounds graded and landscaped, including broad, winding roads and footpaths. The cemetery added six acres of land in 1901, and constructed a new mausoleum in 1914. Glenwood Cemetery (Houston, Texas)
Glenwood Cemetery is located in Houston, Texas, United States. Developed in 1871, the first professionally designed cemetery in the city accepted its first burial in 1872. Its location at Washington Avenue overlooking Buffalo Bayou served as an entertainment attraction in the 1880s. The design was based on principles for garden cemeteries, breaking the pattern of the typical gridiron layouts of most Houston cemeteries. Many influential people lay to rest at Glenwood, making it the " River Oaks of the dead." As of 2018, Glenwood includes the annexed property of the adjacent Washington Cemetery, creating a total area of with still undeveloped. Notable burials at Glenwood include former residents of the Republic of Texas, some who were re-interred from condemned cemeteries from downtown Houston.
