Give Me A Sailor
''Give Me a Sailor'' is a 1938 comedy film directed by Elliott Nugent, starring Martha Raye, Bob Hope, Betty Grable and Jack Whiting. This was Raye and Hope's third film together, the first in which they played the leads. Plot Jim and Walter Brewster are brothers and naval officers; both of whom are in love with Nancy Larkin, much to the chagrin of Nancy's sister Letty. Walter has the inside track with Nancy, but Jim & Letty conspire to keep them apart. There are various comic shenanigans and a "Beautiful Legs" contest that Letty enters in error, but wins and becomes an instant celebrity. Fame and fortune are showered upon her and she and Jim realize that they are meant for each other. Elliott Nugent
Elliott Nugent (September 20, 1896 – August 9, 1980) was an American actor, playwright, writer, and film director. Biography Nugent was born in Dover, Ohio, the son of actor J.C. Nugent. He successfully made the transition from silent film to sound film. He directed ''The Cat and the Canary (1939 film), The Cat and the Canary'' (1939), starring Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard. He also directed the Hope films ''Never Say Die (1939 film), Never Say Die'' (1939) and ''My Favorite Brunette'' (1947). Nugent was a college classmate (and lifelong friend) of fellow Ohioan James Thurber. Together, they wrote the Broadway play ''The Male Animal'' (1940) in which Nugent starred with Gene Tierney. He also directed the 1942 film version of ''The Male Animal'', starring Henry Fonda and Olivia de Havilland. Nana Irene Bryant (November 23, 1888 – December 24, 1955) was an American film, stage, and television actress. She appeared in more than 100 films between 1935 and 1955. Clarence Kolb
Clarence William Kolb (July 31, 1874 – November 25, 1964) was an American vaudeville performer and actor known for his comedy routines that featured a Dutch dialect. Biography Kolb started out as one half of a vaudeville comedy team, Kolb and Dill, with Max Dill. They styled their act on the famous team of Weber and Fields. In addition to their stage work, they appeared in a series of short films and a feature-length movie in 1917. Afterwards, Kolb made a return to vaudeville, only returning to the movies in the late 1930s. In 1935, Kolb left the act to work in films as a character actor, eventually appearing in 75 feature films. He became famous for portraying the same type of character in many films, namely, a politician or businessman.
