''Giornale di Sicilia'' is an Italian daily national newspaper for the island of Sicily. It is based in Palermo, and is the best-selling newspaper in Sicily. Since 2017, it is owned by the daily newspaper of Messina, Gazzetta del Sud. History and profile ''Giornale di Sicilia'' was founded in 1860, immediately following the Expedition of the Thousand headed by Giuseppe Garibaldi; it was first published on 7 June of that year under the name "Giornale Officiale di Sicilia" with Girolamo Ardizzone as its first editor-in-chief. The paper played a significant role in nationalizing the Italian rural women in Sicily at the beginning of the 1900s. History and profile The newspaper was founded in 1974 by the journalist Indro Montanelli, together with the colleagues Enzo Bettiza, Ferenc Fejtő, Raymond Aron and others, after some disagreements with the new pro-left editorial line adopted by the newspaper ''Corriere della Sera'', where Montanelli had been one of the most important contributors. Montanelli left ''Corriere della Sera'' in 1973. The newspaper was first published on 25 June 1974 as ''il Giornale nuovo'', with Indro Montanelli as editor and member of the publishing company board of directors and an editorial office composed of 59 journalists. Expedition Of The Thousand
The Expedition of the Thousand ( it, Spedizione dei Mille) was an event of the Italian Risorgimento that took place in 1860. A corps of volunteers led by Giuseppe Garibaldi sailed from Quarto, near Genoa (now Quarto dei Mille) and landed in Marsala, Sicily, in order to conquer the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, ruled by the House of Bourbon-Two Sicilies. The project was an ambitious and risky venture aiming to conquer, with a thousand men, a kingdom with a larger regular army and a more powerful navy. The expedition was a success and concluded with a plebiscite that brought Naples and Sicily into the Kingdom of Sardinia, the last territorial conquest before the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy on 17 March 1861.
