Gigantactis Paxtoni
''Gigantactis paxtoni'' (common name: Paxton's whipnose) is a species of fish in the whipnose angler (Gigantactinidae) family, first described in 1981 by Erik Bertelsen, Theodore Wells Pietsch III and Robert J. Lavenberg. The species epithet, ''paxtoni'', honours John Paxton of the Australian Museum. Erik Bertelsen
Erik Bertelsen (8 August 1912 – 18 March 1993) was a Danish ichthyologist, who specialised in deep sea fish. The fish, '' Diaphus bertelseni'' is named in his honour. He studied biology at the University of Copenhagen (1930 -) and in 1937 started work on the Dana collection at Charlottenlund Castle and also for the Danish Fisheries Investigation (DFI). He earned a doctorate in 1951 with his dissertation, ''The ceratioid fishes. Ontology, taxonomy, distribution and biology''. He was director of DFI from 1958 to 1971, when he resigned to work at the zoological museum of the University of Copenhagen, where with fewer administrative duties he was able to concentrate on his research on deep sea fish. Theodore Wells Pietsch III
Theodore Wells Pietsch III (born March 6, 1945) is an American systematist and evolutionary biologist especially known for his studies of anglerfishes. Pietsch has described 72 species and 14 genera of fishes and published numerous scientific papers focusing on the relationships, evolutionary history, and functional morphology of teleosts, particularly deep-sea taxa. For this body of work, Pietsch was awarded the Robert H. Gibbs Jr. Memorial Award in Systematic Ichthyology by the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists in 2005. Pietsch has spent most of his career at the University of Washington in Seattle as a professor mentoring graduate students, teaching ichthyology to undergraduates, and curating the ichthyology collections of the UW Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture. Whipnose Angler
The whipnose anglers are a family, Gigantactinidae, of deep-sea anglerfishes. The family name is derived from the Greek words ''gigas'', meaning "big", and ''aktis'', meaning "ray". They are distinguished by the presence of a remarkably long lure (the illicium), which may be longer than the body of the fish. Description Whipnose angler females are easily recognizable because they have an elongated shape and a small head. Their illicium length is an average of one to four times the size of their standard length. The family includes 24 species in two genera. Like the other ceratioid groups, little is known about their ecology, but this species lives a benthic lifestyle while possibly swimming upside down while it is foraging. John Paxton (ichthyologist)
John Richard Paxton (born 1938) is a United States-born Australian ichthyologist, who spent most of his career at the Australian Museum. He has a particular research interest in lanternfishes (family Myctophidae) and other deep-sea fishes. Paxton is a founding member of the Australian Society for Fish Biology and received the society's K. Radway Allen Award in 1997. Early life John Richard Paxton was born in 1938 and grew up in Los Angeles, California. He completed his undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the University of Southern California, beginning with a BA in Zoology (1960) and an MSc in Biology (1965). Deep-sea fish are fish that live in the darkness below the sunlit surface waters, that is below the epipelagic or photic zone of the sea. The lanternfish is, by far, the most common deep-sea fish. Other deep sea fishes include the flashlight fish, cookiecutter shark, bristlemouths, anglerfish, viperfish, and some species of eelpout. Only about 2% of known marine species inhabit the pelagic environment. This means that they live in the water column as opposed to the benthic organisms that live in or on the sea floor. Deep-sea organisms generally inhabit bathypelagic (1000–4000m deep) and abyssopelagic (4000–6000m deep) zones.
