Giardino Della Vittoria, Adrano
The Giardino della Vittoria is a public park located in the center of the town of Adrano, in the Province of Catania, Sicily, Italy. The park rises on land once belonging to the former, but still adjacent, Monastery of Santa Lucia, whose facade and baroque church border on the north. The modern city hall rises along the northwest edge of the park. The first idea for a park at the site arose circa 1800, and guides from 1907 mention a tree lined promenade (passeggiata). One of the prides of the park is a palm-lined passage. In 1920, plans were made to add a memorial to fallen soldiers (caduti) in the park. Plans were generated in 1925, and designs were commissioned from a local artist Angelo Lauricella. The bronze memorial was commissioned from Angelo La Naia, and the park or garden was inaugurated in 1926. Adrano
Adrano (, scn, Ddirnò), ancient ''Adranon'', is a town and in the Metropolitan City of Catania on the east coast of Sicily. It is situated around northwest of Catania, which was also the capital of the province to which Adrano belonged, now a metropolitan city. It lies near the foot of Mount Etna, at the confluence of the Simeto and Salso rivers. It is the commercial center for a region where olives and citrus fruit are grown. Monastero Di Santa Lucia (Adrano)
Monastero di Santa Lucia (Monastery of Saint Lucy) is an architectural complex in the town of Adrano, in the Province of Catania, region of Sicily, Italy. The former Benedictine monastery currently serves as an elementary school, and attached to it is the Giovanni Verga high school. In front of the facade is a polygenal public park known as either Giardino della Vittoria or Villa Comunale. The monastery of Santa Lucia was founded in 1157 by Adelasia, the granddaughter of the Norman Count Ruggero. Her endowment allowed poor young girls to enter the monastery without requiring a dowry for sustenance. The monastery owned surrounding farmlands. At the time, this was located outside the medieval city walls, near the church of the Madonna della Consolazione. The monastery was expanded in 1596, but much was rebuilt, including the central baroque church in the late 18th century. The façade has three orders. Angelo La Naia
Angelo La Naia (November 14, 1884 – 16 June 1968) was an Italian painter. Biography La Naia was born in Adrano, in Sicily to a family of limited means living off farming. As a young man, he was encouraged to pursue painting by Nicolò Lauricella and Giuseppe Guzzardi. He was a pupil for a time under Guzzardi, and at a local school of art. Giuseppe Guzzardi
Giuseppe Guzzardi (December 8, 1845 in Adrano – September 14, 1914 in Florence) was an Italian painter. Biography Guzzardi was born in Adernò, now called Adrano. He first trained as a child with a local painter, Vincenzo Costa. His early work showed such promise that the comune awarded him a stipend to study in Florence, where he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Florence, Academy of Fine Arts under Antonio Ciseri. In 1874, he first exhibited at the Florentine Promotrice. In 1876 at the Academy in Florence, he exhibited ''The Virgin on Golgotha'' (now in Sanctuary of Maria SS. Ausiliatrice of Adrano). In 1876 he exhibited at the Florentine Promotrice ''Rural Idyll'', which the Artistic Fellowship selected to be copied for distribution to its members. He was also in demand as a portraitist.
