Gian Singh Naqqash
Gian Singh Naqqash (1883 – 1953) was a Punjabi Sikh artist. He was a fresco painter and worked at the Golden Temple for more than 33 years. He is particularly known for painting in the style that is known as the Sikh School of Painting. Biography Early life Gian Singh was born in 1883 in Amritsar, British Punjab (now Punjab, India). His family had no prior background in art. His father was Charan Singh or Taba Singh, who worked as a comb-maker. As a child, he was a student of Giani Thakur Singh, a Sikh missionary and academic. He studied until the 5th standard. Later-on after finishing primary school, he became the apprentice of Nihal Singh Naqqash, son of Bishan Singh and a third generation descendant of Kehar Singh Naqqash, whom had worked under the patronage of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Sardar Gian Singh Rarewala (16 December 1901 – 31 December 1979) was an Indian politician and the first Chief Minister (actually designated as the Prime Minister) of the former Indian state of Patiala and East Punjab States Union. Early life Rarewala was born on 16 December 1901, at Rara village, Patiala. He was a descendant of Ratan Singh Bhangu, author of ''Panth Prakash''. Rarewala studied in Patiala and graduated from Mahindra College in 1924. He joined the judicial service of the princely state of Patiala. Later, he became a High Court judge for Patiala State. He also served as a Revenue Commissioner and Revenue Minister for Patiala state and finally he was the Prime Minister of Patiala state from 1946 to 1947. Gian Singh (5 October 19206 October 1996) was a recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Early life Singh was born into a Jat Sikh family in Sahabpur, a village in the Nawanshahr district (now, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district) of eastern Punjab. He enlisted in the British Indian Army in 1937. Details He was 24 years old, and a Naik in the 15th Punjab Regiment in the British Indian Army, when during the Burma Campaign 1944–45 of World War II he performed the deeds for which he was awarded the VC. The citation reads: Singh received a mention in dispatches later that year. He was presented with his Victoria Cross by King George VI, in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace on 16 October 1945.
