Ghantasala Venkateswararao (4 December 1922 – 11 February 1974), known mononymously by his surname as Ghantasala, was an Indian playback singer and film composer known for his works predominantly in Telugu and Kannada cinema and also in Tamil, Malayalam, Tulu and Hindi language films. He is considered as one of the greatest singers of Telugu cinema. In 1970, he received the Padma Shri award, India's fourth highest civilian award for his contribution to Indian cinema. According to ''The Hindu'' and ''The Indian Express'', Ghantasala was 'such a divine talent and with his songs he could move the hearts of the people'. 'Ghantasala's blending of classical improvisations to the art of light music combined with his virtuosity and sensitivity puts him a class apart, above all others in the field of playback singing'. Ghantasala Balaramayya was an Indian film director, producer, and actor in Telugu cinema. His notable films include '' Sri Seetarama Jananam'' (1944), '' Balaraju'' (1948), '' Swapna Sundari'' (1950), and ''Sri Lakshmamma Katha'' (1950). Balaramayya is known for providing Akkineni Nageswara Rao his first lead role in the 1944 mythological film '' Sri Seetarama Jananam''. Biography Ghantasala Balaramayya was born in 1906 in Pottepalem in Nellore District, Andhra Pradesh into a Brahmin family. He started his career as a stage singer and later started to produce and direct. He is the grandfather of the music director S. Thaman. Ghantasala, Krishna District
Ghantasala is a village in Krishna district of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It is 21 km west of Machilipatnam and 11 km east of Krishna River. The largest city of this district, Vijaywada, is around 60 km away. It is a rare and reputed center for Buddhist sculptures. Ghantasala mandal is one of the 25 mandals in the Krishna district of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The headquarters of this mandal is located in the town of Ghantasala. Geography The mandal is bordered by Pamidimukkala and Movva to the north, Guduru mandal to the east, Mopidevi mandal to the south, and Krishna river to the west. Demographics As at the 2011 census, the population was 40,098 people residing in 12,946 households, divided into 20,182 males and 19,916 females, for a gender ratio of 987 females per 1000 males. 3,251 children were 0–6 years, of which 1,783 were boys and 1,468 were girls for a gender ratio of 823 females per 1000 males.
