	Gerry, New York Gerry is a town in Chautauqua County, New York, United States. The population was 1,789 at the 2020 census. The town is named after Elbridge Gerry, the fifth Vice President of the United States. The town is centrally located in the county and is north of Jamestown. History Settlement began ''circa'' 1810. The town of Gerry was formed in 1812 from a part of the town of Pomfret. The size of the town was reduced by the formation of the newer towns of Ellington and Charlotte. By 1900, the population of Gerry was 1,198. Gerry is best known for hosting an annual rodeo (which has been an annual event in the town since 1945) and a Scandinavian folk festival, both of which are held in the summer. History Phillipston was first settled in 1751, and incorporated as the town of Gerry on October 20, 1786, after separating from Templeton. It was named after Elbridge Gerry. It is the first film of Van Sant's " Death Trilogy", three films based on deaths that occurred in real life and is succeeded by ''Elephant'' (2003) and '' Last Days'' (2005). ''Gerry'' follows two hiking companions who both go by the name "Gerry". "Gerry" is also a slang term, used by both protagonists throughout the misadventure, meaning "to screw up". History The company was founded in 1946 in Ward, Colorado, by Gerald "Gerry" Cunningham, a veteran of the 10th Mountain Division. Initially it was a mail order business providing lightweight equipment for mountaineers. In 1950, Cunningham developed the triangular carabiner, the first in the modern style. Less than five years later, he also invented the drawstring clamp also known as a cord clamp or cord lock. In 1953, Gerry tents were used in the first successful Everest expedition.
