German Courtly Romance
In the Middle High German (MHG) period (1050–1350) the courtly romance, written in rhyming couplets, was the dominant narrative genre in the literature of the noble courts, and the romances of Hartmann von Aue, Gottfried von Strassburg and Wolfram von Eschenbach, written , are recognized as classics. The courtly romance has its origins in French-speaking courts around 1160, where various poets adapted the Matter of Rome (tales from the classical world) to the written vernacular, while Chrétien de Troyes did the same for the Matter of Britain (King Arthur and the knights of the Round Table). Chrétien, in particular, had a decisive influence on the development of the genre in German. The earliest German romance is Heinrich von Veldeke's ''Eneas'', based on the anonymous Old French ''Roman d'Enéas'', part of the Matter of Rome, itself an adaptation of Virgil's Aeneid. Middle High German
Middle High German (MHG; german: Mittelhochdeutsch (Mhd.)) is the term for the form of German spoken in the High Middle Ages. It is conventionally dated between 1050 and 1350, developing from Old High German and into Early New High German. High German is defined as those varieties of German which were affected by the Second Sound Shift; the Middle Low German and Middle Dutch languages spoken to the North and North West, which did not participate in this sound change, are not part of MHG. While there is no ''standard'' MHG, the prestige of the Hohenstaufen court gave rise in the late 12th century to a supra-regional literary language (') based on Swabian, an Alemannic dialect. Konrad Von Würzburg
Konrad von Würzburg (c.1220-1230 – 31 August 1287) was the chief German poet of the second half of the 13th century. As with most epic poets of the age, little is known of his life, and his origin is disputed. There have been German scholars and local patriots of Würzburg who claimed he hailed from Würzburg. Wilhelm Wackernagel on the other hand contends that Konrad was from Basel, as the house he owned was called the "House of Wirzburg", meaning he was named "Würzburg" not after a city, but after a house. He seems to have spent part of his life in Strasbourg and his later years in Basel, where he died. Like his master, Gottfried von Strassburg, but unlike most other poets from the time, Würzburg did not belong to the nobility. An epic poem, or simply an epic, is a lengthy narrative poem typically about the extraordinary deeds of extraordinary characters who, in dealings with gods or other superhuman forces, gave shape to the mortal universe for their descendants. He is known for his Old French poem ''Tristan'', a version of the Tristan and Iseult legend that exists only in eight fragments, amounting to around 3,300 lines of verse, mostly from the latter part of the story. ''Iwein'' is a Middle High German verse romance by the poet Hartmann von Aue, written around 1200. An Arthurian tale freely adapted from Chrétien de Troyes' Old French ''Yvain, the Knight of the Lion'', it tells the story of Iwein (Yvain), a knight of King Arthur's Round Table. It was written after Hartmann's ''Erec'', and is generally taken to be his last work. The poem tells how Iwein embarks on an adventure which culminates in marriage to the lady Laudine. ''Erec'' (also ''Erek'', ''Ereck'') is a Middle High German poem written in rhyming couplets by Hartmann von Aue. It is thought to be the earliest of Hartmann's narrative works and dates from around 1185. An adaptation of Chrétien de Troyes' ''Erec et Enide'', it is the first Arthurian Romance in German.
