German Tobacco Workers' Union
The German Tobacco Workers' Union (german: Deutscher Tabakarbeiter-Verband) was a trade union representing people in the tobacco manufacturing industry in Germany. The German Cigar Workers' Union was founded in 1848, but was subsequently banned. Friedrich Wilhelm Fritzsche formed the General German Cigar Workers' Association in Leipzig in 1865, and within two years it had 6,500 members, making it one of the largest unions of the day. It was linked closely with the General German Workers' Association (ADAV), whose leader wished to establish dictatorial powers. General German Trade Union Federation
The General German Trade Union Federation (german: Allgemeiner Deutscher Gewerkschaftsbund, ADGB) was a confederation of German trade unions in Germany founded during the Weimar Republic. It was founded in 1919 and was initially powerful enough to organize a general strike in 1920 against a right-wing coup d'état. After the 1929 Wall Street crash, the ensuing global financial crisis caused widespread unemployment. The ADGB suffered a dramatic loss of membership, both from unemployment and political squabbles. By the time the Nazis seized control of the government, the ADGB's leadership had distanced itself from the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) and was openly cooperating with Nazis in an attempt to keep the organization alive. Nonetheless, on May 2, 1933, the SA and SS stormed the offices of the ADGB and its member trade unions, seized their assets and arrested their leaders, crushing the organization. International Federation Of Tobacco Workers
The International Federation of Tobacco Workers (IFTW) was a global union federation bringing together unions representing workers involved in growing, processing or selling tobacco. History The idea of an international federation of tobacco workers arose in the 1880s in the Belgian and Dutch unions, which tried to interest the German Tobacco Workers' Union in participating. In 1889, a conference was held in Antwerp between the unions, and in 1890, the federation was launched. It was based in Antwerp until 1910, then in Bremen, but became moribund during World War I. It was refounded in 1918, and the headquarters were moved to Amsterdam. By 1925, the federation had 25 affiliates, with a total of 118,000 members. This then fell, and by 1935, it had only 42,000 members, in Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, France, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the UK. Friedrich Wilhelm Fritzsche
Friedrich Wilhelm Fritzsche (March 25, 1825 – February 5, 1905), commonly known by his middle name, was a Germans, German trade union, trade unionist and socialism, socialist politician who was elected a member of the Reichstag (German Empire), Reichstag. He was a founder and President of the General German Cigar Workers' Union (ADZV) in 1865. The subject of police persecution for his political views, in 1881 Fritzsche emigrated to the United States of America, where he edited the newspaper the ''Philadelphia Tageblatt'' for a time before retiring from politics.
