Gerhard Ludwig Müller (; born 31 December 1947) is a German Catholic prelate who served as the Cardinal-Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith from his appointment by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012 until 2017. Pope Francis elevated him to the rank of cardinal in 2014. Early life Gerhard Ludwig Müller was born in Finthen, a borough of Mainz, then in Allied-occupied Germany. After graduating from Willigis Episcopal High School in Mainz, he studied philosophy and theology in Mainz, Munich, and Freiburg, West Germany. In 1977, he received his Doctorate in Theology under Karl Lehmann for his thesis on the Protestant theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer and pursued an Habilitation, qualifying him for a chair in 1985, also under Lehmann on the theology of the "communion of saints". Congregation For The Doctrine Of The Faith
The Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith (DDF) is a department of the Roman Curia in charge of the religious discipline of the Catholic Church. The Dicastery is the oldest among the departments of the Roman Curia. Its seat is the Palace of the Holy Office in Rome, just outside Vatican City. It was founded to defend the Catholic Church from Heresy in the Catholic Church, heresy and is the body responsible for promulgating and defending Catholic doctrine. This institution was founded by Pope Paul III on 21 July 1542, as the Supreme Sacred Congregation of the Roman and Universal Inquisition.
