George West, Texas
George West is a city in Live Oak County, Texas, United States, and named for cattle rancher George Washington West. The population was 2,445 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Live Oak County. George West was named the " storytelling capital of Texas" in 2005 by the Texas Senate; and it hosts the ''George West Storyfest'', a festival that features storytelling, cowboy poetry, and music. Numerous ranches surround George West. The Texas author and folklorist J. Frank Dobie was born in Live Oak County near George West in 1888. Former State Senator Cyndi Taylor Krier, also the administrative judge of Bexar County, was reared near George West in the unincorporated community of Dinero. George Washington West
George Washington West (1851–1926) was a Texas rancher. He was one of the first cattlemen to drive longhorns to the Kansas railhead. He was reported to have commanded one of the longest recorded cattle drives, which started at Lavaca County and ended at the Canadian border. He founded the towns of George West, Texas, and Kittie, Texas. both in Live Oak County. Early life West was born in Shannonville, Tennessee, to the parents of Washington West and Mary Buckwalter Willauer. In 1854 West moved his family to Lavaca County. Their home became a main stop for stagecoaches that later would help create the community of Sweet Home. He married Catherine Elizabeth "Kittie" Searcy on 8 Jun 1874. Career West was one of the first to drive longhorn cattle to the Kansas railheads from 1867 until the trails closed. George West (February 17, 1823September 20, 1901) was an industrialist and a U.S. Representative from New York. Life Born in Bradninch, Devonshire, England, West attended the common schools. West emigrated to the United States in February 1849 and settled at Ballston Spa, New York in 1860. Business career In Ballston Spa West gradually acquired nine water-powered mills on Kayaderosseras Creek by 1879 manufacturing cotton, paper, and paper bags. West was called "The Paper Bag King" because he was one of the first men in the country to manufacture paper bags at a time when most bags were made from cotton. In 1869, he and the few other bag manufacturers in the country joined with Francis Wolle, inventor of the first paper bag machine, to form the Union Paper Bag Machine Company. George John Frederick West, Viscount Cantelupe (26 April 1814 – 25 June 1850), was a British politician. Styled Viscount Cantelupe from birth, he was the eldest son of George Sackville-West, 5th Earl De La Warr, by Lady Elizabeth Sackville, daughter of John Sackville, 3rd Duke of Dorset. He was the elder brother of Major-General Charles Sackville-West, 6th Earl De La Warr, Mortimer Sackville-West, 1st Baron Sackville, Lionel Sackville-West, 2nd Baron Sackville and Elizabeth Russell, Duchess of Bedford. George West (21 October 1889 – 1976) was an English professional footballer. During his career, he made over 100 appearances in the Southern League and the Football League during spells with Cardiff City and Stockport County. Career Born in Wardley, West was playing for Wallsend when he was spotted by Cardiff City manager Fred Stewart who was in the process of building a side following the club's decision to become fully professional three years earlier. Signed as a replacement for John Burton, West adapted quickly to the Southern Football League, finishing as the club's top scorer for two consecutive seasons between 1913 and 1915. George West (bishop)
George Algernon West, MM (17 December 1893 – 25 May 1980) was a British Anglican missionary who spent many years in Burma, first as a missionary for the Society for Propagation of the Gospel and then as the Lord Bishop of Rangoon. In the latter position he served for nineteen years, and gradually became active involved with the Moral Re-Armament movement. After retiring from Burma in 1954 he became Assistant Bishop of Durham. Early life and career George Algernon West was born on 17 December 1893, the son of the Reverend George West and Marion West. His father, also named George Algernon, despite being a staunch supporter of Keir Hardie and of his Labour Party, sent the young George to St. Bees Grammar School in Cumberland, the only public school in Cumberland and Westmorland. George Stephen West (20 April 1876 – 7 August 1919), ARCS, FLS, was a British botanist, a specialist in phycology and protistology, a botanical illustrator and a writer. With his father. botanist William West (West, 1848–1914), he collaborated on numerous scientific books. West's brother was the botanist William West Jr (W. West, 1875–1901), who assisted his father with fieldwork. West was professor of natural history at the Royal Agricultural College at Cirencester, then was based for the rest of his life at the University of Birmingham, where he was elected Mason Professor of Botany, following the retirement of William Hillhouse.
