George W. Thompson (Medal Of Honor)
George Washington Thompson (1847 – unknown) was a Private in the U.S. Army who served with the 2nd U.S. Cavalry during the Indian Wars. He was one of five men received the Medal of Honor for gallantry fighting the Plains Indians at the Little Blue River in Little Blue, Nebraska on May 15, 1870. Biography George Washington Thompson was born in Victory, New York in 1847. He enlisted in the Army from Syracuse, New York in March 1866, and was assigned to Company C of the 2nd U.S. Cavalry. Thompson was sent out west where he served on the frontier for most of his military career and took part in campaigns against the Plains Indians during the early 1870s. On May 15, 1870, while searching for stray horses near the Little Blue River (near present-day Little Blue, Nebraska), Thompson and five other cavalrymen were ambushed by a hostile band of 50 Indians. Victory is a town in Cayuga County, New York, United States. The population was 1,660 at the 2010 census. The name celebrates the political victory in forming the town. It is in the northwestern part of the county and north of Auburn. History Victory was within the Central New York Military Tract. The town was first settled ''circa'' 1799. The town was formed from the town of Cato in 1821 after a bitter political dispute about whether to break up Cato. The town of Conquest was formed at the same time and also given a name celebrating the split. Patrick James Leonard (May 19, 1847 – January 1, 1899) was a United States Army Sergeant#Army 13, sergeant who received the Medal of Honor during the Indian Wars. Until 1984, it was believed that Leonard was a double recipient of the Medal of Honor. However, another Irishman, Patrick Thomas Leonard, had also received the Medal of Honor.
