George Strong (VC)
George Strong VC (7 April 1833 – 25 August 1888) was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Details Strong was born 7 April 1833 in Odcombe, Somerset. He was 19 years old, and a private in the Coldstream Guards, British Army during the Crimean War, when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC. In September 1855, at Sevastopol, in the Crimea, when on duty, Private Strong picked up a live shell which had fallen into the trench, and threw it over the parapet. He was well aware of the extreme danger involved, and his action saved many lives. Strong died on 25 August 1888. George Crockett Strong
George Crockett Strong (October 16, 1832 – July 30, 1863) was a Union brigadier general in the American Civil War. Biography Strong was born in Stockbridge, Vermont, and attended Williston Seminary but left after 1851. Strong's ancestors all came to from England, and they all arrived in early colonial New England as part of the Puritan migration to New England between 1620 and 1640. He attended Union College, but left for the U.S. Military Academy, from which he graduated in 1857. He served as an ordnance officer with the rank of lieutenant on the staff of General McDowell at the First Battle of Bull Run. He later served on the staffs of Generals George B. McClellan and Benjamin Butler. "Cadet Life at West Point by an Officer of the United States Army" (Boston: T.O.H.P. Burnham, 1862), although published anonymously, is attributed to Strong. George Templeton Strong (January 26, 1820 – July 21, 1875) was an American lawyer, musician and diarist. His 2,250-page diary, discovered in the 1930s, provides a striking personal account of life in the 19th century, especially during the events of the American Civil War. It covers 1835 to 1875. The historian Paula Baker described him as "perhaps the northern equivalent of South Carolina's Mary Chesnut: quotable, opinionated, and a careful follower of events." He was a well-placed civic leader who was very well known in New York City. He served with distinction on the United States Sanitary Commission during the Civil War, but never occupied any significant civic positions and had no special influence. George Veazey Strong (March 14, 1880 – January 10, 1946) was a U.S. Army general with the rank of major general, who is most famous for his service as commander of the Military Intelligence Corps during World War II. Early life Strong was born on March 14, 1880, in the Chicago suburb of Evanston, Illinois. His family later moved to Helena, Montana, where he attended Helena High School. Strong then attended the Michigan Military Academy for two years, graduating in 1900.
