George Shaw (biologist)
George Kearsley Shaw (10 December 1751 – 22 July 1813) was an English botanist and zoologist. Life Shaw was born at Bierton, Buckinghamshire, and was educated at Magdalen Hall, Oxford, receiving his M.A. in 1772. He took up the profession of medical practitioner. In 1786 he became the assistant lecturer in botany at the University of Oxford. He was a co-founder of the Linnean Society in 1788, and became a fellow of the Royal Society in 1789. In 1791 Shaw became assistant keeper of the natural history department at the British Museum, succeeding Edward Whitaker Gray as keeper in 1806. He found that most of the items donated to the museum by Hans Sloane were in very bad condition. Medical and anatomical material was sent to the museum at the Royal College of Surgeons, but many of the stuffed animals and birds had deteriorated and had to be burnt. George Shaw (architect)
George Shaw (1810-1876) was an English architect specialising in Gothic revival churches and other buildings. He was also an antiquary and collector of medieval, Tudor and Jacobean relics, including books, armour, furniture and architectural salvage. Early life George Shaw was born in Uppermill, in the parish of Saddleworth in the West Riding of Yorkshire, on 5 October 1810. He was the eldest son of Giles Shaw, the owner of a woollen mill, and his wife Elizabeth, née Radcliffe. Giles Shaw also owned most of the land on which the village of Uppermill stands today. George was schooled locally, probably at Boarshurst school, Saddleworth, which opened in 1814, and had joined his father's firm by the age of nineteen. In 1830 he became a traveller for the mill, visiting customers all over the north of England, the Midlands, and southern Scotland. George Shaw (footballer, Born 1899)
George Edward Shaw (13 October 1899 – 10 March 1973) was an English professional footballer who played for Doncaster Rovers, Gillingham, Huddersfield Town, West Bromwich Albion, Stalybridge Celtic, Worcester City and Floriana. Shaw played for Gillingham for two seasons before moving back home up north to Doncaster to play for his local club Doncaster Rovers. In a season which saw Doncaster become runners up in the Midland League and win the Wharncliffe Charity Cup, Shaw scored 6 league goals, 5 of them penalties, plus one penalty in the cup rounds. The following season, 1923–24, Rovers were selected for promotion back to the Football League for the first time since 1905. In their first match of the season Shaw managed to send his penalty kick into the stand, thus missing out on scoring their first return goal and failing to win the match. George Shaw (footballer, Born 1886)
George "Yorkie" Shaw (1 April 1886 – 30 April 1971) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Fitzroy in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1910s. Football At 164 cm, rover George Shaw was one of the smallest players in the game's history and kicked two goals in their 1913 Grand Final win against St Kilda. He also played in their premiership side in 1916, retiring in 1920 after playing 117 games for Fitzroy. Following an unsuccessful pre-season trial with Richmond in 1922, Shaw took a position on the VFL field umpires list. Umpiring primarily in the Peninsula Football Association through 1922 and 1923, he was selected to umpire two VFL matches in August 1923, making his debut as a substitute for umpire Bob Scott, who was ill. George Shaw (cricketer, Born 1931)
George Bernard Shaw (24 October 1931 – 2 August 1984) was a Welsh cricketer. Shaw was a right-handed batsman who bowled right-arm off break. He was born in Treharris, Glamorgan. Shaw made his first-class debut for Glamorgan against the Combined Services in 1951. He made 15 further first-class appearances for Glamorgan, the last of which came against Surrey in the 1955 County Championship. A bowler, Shaw took 26 wickets for Glamorgan, at an average of 27.15, with best figures of 5/38. These figures came in his second first-class match against the Combined Services in 1952, a match in which he also took his other five-wicket haul of 5/67, to give him match figures of 10/105. Typically though, he found it harder against county professionals. He emigrated to Australia in 1978, where six years later he was killed in a car crash outside Port Pirie, South Australia, on 2 August 1984.
