George Shaw (Queensland Politician)
George William Shaw (28 July 1913 – 9 January 1966) was an Australian politician. He was a Country Party member of the Australian House of Representatives from 1963 until his death in 1966, representing the electorate of Dawson. Shaw was born in Rockhampton and was educated at Mackay High School. He was assistant secretary (1933-1935) and secretary (1935-1943) of the Cattle Creek Co-operative Sugar Milling Association, which operated the Cattle Creek Sugar Mill at Finch Hatton. He was then general manager of the large sugar mill at Farleigh from 1943 to 1964 and was credited with undertaking a rebuilding program at the mill after World War II. From 1949, Shaw was the inaugural deputy chairman of Sugar Research Ltd, which established the industry-backed Sugar Research Institute at Mackay. Finch Hatton is a rural town and locality in the Mackay Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , the locality of Finch Hatton had a population of 499 people. Geography Finch Hatton lies in the valley of Cattle Creek (a tributary of the Pioneer River) which flows from west to east through the locality. Although the centre of the locality beside the creek is at 100 metres above sea level, the northern and southern parts of the locality are mountainous rising to 970 metres in the north and 870 metres in the south. The valley contains the town, roughly centre of the locality. The Mackay–Eungella Road passes through the valley and the town from west to east, although it is called Anzac Parade within the town. Sugar Research Institute is a heritage-listed former research station at 239 Nebo Road, West Mackay, Mackay, Mackay Region, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Karl Langer and built in 1953 by Don Johnstone. Harold Vivian Marsh Brown designed a second stage in 1963 that was built in 1966.
