The Blind Boys Of Alabama
The Blind Boys of Alabama, also billed as The Five Blind Boys of Alabama, and Clarence Fountain and the Blind Boys of Alabama, is an American gospel group. The group was founded in 1939 in Talladega, Alabama, and has featured a changing roster of musicians over its history, the majority of whom are or were vision impaired. The Blind Boys found mainstream success following their appearance in the 1983 Obie Award-winning musical ''The Gospel at Colonus''. Since then, the group has toured internationally and has performed and recorded with such artists as Prince, Lou Reed, Peter Gabriel, Bonnie Raitt, Ben Harper, Bon Iver, and Amadou & Mariam. The group's cover of the Tom Waits song "Way Down in the Hole" was used as the theme song for the first season of the HBO series ''The Wire''. George Scott (first Baseman)
George Charles Scott Jr. (March 23, 1944 β July 28, 2013), nicknamed "Boomer", was an American professional baseball player, coach and manager. He played in Major League Baseball as a first baseman from to , most prominently for the Boston Red Sox where he was a member of the American League pennant winning team and, with the Milwaukee Brewers where he was the American League home run and RBI champion. A three-time All-Star player, Scott was one of the most accomplished defensive first basemen of his era, winning eight Gold Glove Awards between 1967 and 1976. During his major league career, he also played for the Kansas City Royals and the New York Yankees. After his Major League career, Scott became a player-manager in the Mexican League and went on to become full-time manager in the Independent baseball league from the 1980s until 2002. Lord George William Montagu Douglas Scott, (31 August 1866 β 23 February 1947) was a Scottish cricketer and soldier who was a younger son of William Montagu Douglas Scott, 6th Duke of Buccleuch. Early life Scott was born in Bowhill, Selkirkshire, the third son of William Montagu Douglas Scott, 6th Duke of Buccleuch. He was the brother of John Montagu Douglas Scott, 7th Duke of Buccleuch and Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester was his niece. He was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford. He played first-class cricket for various teams including Middlesex, Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) and Oxford University from 1884 to 1905. He represented the Gentlemen in the Gentlemen v Players series. He was also Master of the Buccleuch Hunt. George Scot or Scott ( β 1685) of Pitlochie, Fife was a Scottish writer on colonisation in North America. Early life Scot, who was born around 1640, was the only son of John Scot of Scotstarvet by his second wife, Elizabeth Melville, daughter of Sir James Melville, 2nd of Halhill. Career In 1685, Scot published at Edinburgh ''The Model of the Government of the Province of East New Jersey, in America; and Encouragement for such as design to be concerned there''. George Arbuthnot Scott
George Arbuthnot Scott (12 April 1879 – 8 June 1927) played first-class cricket for Cambridge University in 1900 and 1901. He was born at Wimbledon, then in Surrey (now London), and died at Ore, Hastings, Sussex. Educated at Tonbridge School and Emmanuel College, Cambridge, Scott was a right-arm fast bowler and a right-handed tail-end batsman. He played first for Cambridge University in 1900 and in his second match, against Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), he took five first innings wickets for 72 runs, his wickets being five of the first six MCC batsmen. However, he achieved little in two subsequent games for the university side and did not win a blue. After the university term was over, he appeared in a second eleven match for Kent. George Scott (August 27, 1929 β January 20, 2014) was a Canadian professional wrestler, booker and promoter. From the 1950s until the 1970s, he and his younger brother Sandy competed as The Flying Scotts in North American regional promotions including the National Wrestling Alliance, particularly the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic territories, as well as successful stints in the American Wrestling Association, Maple Leaf Wrestling and Stampede Wrestling. Scott was also the longtime head booker for the Jim Crockett Promotions working under promoter Jim Crockett, Jr. during the 1970s and with Vince McMahon during the World Wrestling Federation's national expansion during the early 1980s. George Gardiner Scott (11 June 1915 β 26 July 1942) was a Scottish professional football inside right who played in the Scottish League for East Fife and Aberdeen. Personal life Scott attended Lumphinnans Primary School. In 1941, during the Second World War, he enlisted in the RAF and during a period training in Canada, met and married his wife Jessie. Scott returned to Scotland in 1942 and was posted to No. 19 Operational Training Unit at RAF Kinloss. On 26 July 1942, Sergeant Scott, serving as an air gunner on board an Armstrong Whitworth Whitley, took off from RAF Kinloss to conduct a cross-country training exercise. The aircraft suffered engine failure in mid-air, caught fire, and crashed into the Dornoch Firth off Tain, killing all 5 on board, including Scott.
